This Is A Nightmare!

I just need to vent right now. I am in complete panic mode..
In Michigan, we got this crazy ice storm last night and everyone around us lost power. After waiting on the phone for over 2 hours to talk to our electricity company, we were told we won't have power until Saturday!!! WTF! It is suppose to drop to 4 degrees in the next couples nights.
We called around to every hardware store within a 50 mile radius and everyone is sold out of generators.
Being 38 weeks pregnant, this is the last thing I want to deal with :(

  • @elsutto2 got any friends or relatives with a generator that will let you stay over? Any hotels you could check into? So sorry that you're having this issue :(

  • OH NO! I am in mich too. My inlaws lost power but we didn't. I didn't notice an ice build up in my area when I went out to breakfast. I was surprise my inlaws lost power because they live ten minutes away. I hope you get power much sooner!
    BFP #1 (7/13/12) MC (8/14) 9 weeks. D & C 8/17.
BFP #2 (5/18/13) due 1/26/14. Grow baby grow!
    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • We don't have any friends or relatives that have generators that live close to us. We have 2 dogs too. We have thought about checking into a hotel, but I honestly don't know if we can afford it. We have been saving up money so I could afford to be off work with the little one for 6-12 weeks.
We do have a gas stove and gas fireplace. It doesn't put out much heat but it is better than nothing!
And thank you everyone! I know we will be okay, just a little scary.
Maybe it wouldn't be a bad time to go into labor... Hospitals always have power, right? :)

  • I'm in Michigan as well and I've noticed they always say the latest possible date it will be fixed because they would rather say "it will be on by Saturday" and have it come on by Tuesday and everyone's all excited and happy rather than say "it'll be on Tuesday" and everyone's pissed when it's not on by then!!! I hope this is the case for you guys ... I know it's hard to drop money on a hotel when you've been saving but try and make the best of it ... Nature could be forcing you to have a mini "babymoon" ;) ... Or go see a double feature at the warm movie theater ... Sit in a bookstore together etc. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this -- being cold is one of the worst feelings !!!!
  • Poor thing!!  I'm from Missouri and the last ice storm I remember that kept us without power was years ago, but it was awful!!  I'm so sorry you're dealing with this!!   Cuddle up with puppies and DH to keep warm!!  I'm sending warm thoughts from FL!

  • We had an ice storm our first winter in our house. Fortunately we had a gas fire place that was up and running at the time we lost power. We managed to survive 3 days, with 2 toddlers, in the room with the fireplace. Then we had to go elsewhere when the temps got below freezing. We drove 1.5 hours to my MIL's, and stayed there until the power went back on, over a week later.

(aka- I know what you're going through)

Hopefully they will be able to work faster than they say, and you'll have power back soon!

  • Oh no! What part of MI are you in? My mom is also in MI and lost power last night - consumers told her Wednesday at the earliest and it came on this morning - so fingers crossed!
  • Can you get a kerosene heater?
My in laws had an ice storm, too. Didn't lose power, but the bigger city near them lost it. Sorry you're in this situation.

  • That is terrible. I am so sorry. The other thing you can do is boil water to fill up a tub (plus some cold water from the faucet) to bathe/warm up. It takes a while, but it's doable.
  • That's awful! I'm so sorry.

  • So sorry to hear this!
Right now we still have power, but we are the last of our family and friends that do...
So it's touch and go, and Toronto is not making any promises that power will be restored to those affected by Christmas.

    :(

  • In 1998 we had a huge ice storm that knocked the power out for a week. I was only 8 at the time so I lived at home, and we had a wood stove. We lived in a decently big house (the woodstove alone wouldn't have been able to heat the whole house), so we pretty much lived in the family room (living room) and closed off the rest of the house to keep the heat contained. It was actually pretty fun, but not so much when you're super pregnant I would imagine.

  • Definitely not fun!  When my family lived in Vermont the same thing happened to them.  They had a wood-burning stove, though.  I know a few families came and stayed with them.  Hopefully they get your electricity turned back on sooner rather than later!!  I should probably check in with my friends in Michigan...I saw on facebook earlier that my friend's son had posted that their lights were flickering!!

  • UGH no fun! Sounds like a PERFECT time to go into labor to me.
  • Can you order a generator online and have it shipped to you? I can't imagine being without heat this time of year. Hope your power is restored soon.

  • We're in michigan too. Luckily did not lose power but when we used to live farther north we did lose power a lot. We used this trick: put up sheets over the doorways of the room you are gonna stay in the most the. Just move everyone in with spare blankets. Blinds stay closed the entire time unless it gets above freezing. Good luck! My sisters basement is flooded and they are estimating hers won't be on till Saturday either.

Whenever I read things like this, it makes me feel old. I was 20-21 in 1998, lol.

  • Try not to panic @Elsutto2!! I know easier said than done, but ditto pp who said they'll give you the worst case scenario. I have a girlfriend who lost power a week ago, and they were told TEN days! It came back on within 12 hours. I'm sending lots of thoughts and prayers for electricity restoration your way!

If nothing else...man, I think you may be leaking fluid...you should really go to the hospital and get checked out! A lot.

  • I'm from Michigan to and we had a gas stove so when we would loose power we would turn the oven on and open the door part way to heat at least some of the house. I hope your power comes back on soon :(
  • Thank you thank you everyone! We had a crazy, very unlucky past 24 hours but are still alive! We finally found a generator and just hooked it up. I cried. Our house was below 50 degrees.... that's flipping cold!!
The estimated time our power is suppose to turn back on is still Saturday the 28th at 11:30 pm. I'm starting to stink :/

  • I'm in Michigan too and fortunately we have power this time. We have lost power a lot in the last year...almost a week this July, a few times last winter, and we were without it for a few days a couple weeks ago. A few friends of mine were told Saturday and they got their power back on today. Good luck to you!

Tip: Sounds silly but if you have a gas stove/oven, heat up a few stones. You can use them like heat packs under your blankets, etc.

  • Does the generator work? I'm sorry you're dealing with this.

Yea. We had to get a electrician to hook it up for us.
We found one late last night at Home Depot over an hour away, brought it home to hook up and the engine was cracked. We went and exchanged it (over an hour away) with a different one at 6am this morning, went to hook it up and that was also cracked. We called up there and they were completely sold out. So we called around to every store we could think of and finally heard that a Costco 1.5 hours away had 6 in stock and they wouldn't hold one for us. So we had to race up there in hopes they would still have one. I cried when we got there and they still had a couple.
We are waiting for our house to warm up before we try to turn on anything else in case we are cursed with more bad luck.
