June 2014 Moms

Genetics test

FTM here. I saw my doctor yesterday, he said everything looked great. I'm 16w2d. There were a couple things he wanted to talk to me about 1 was to schedule my gender revealing ultrasound the other was if I wanted to do a genetics test. I told him no on the genetics test but when I told my H, he thought I should do it so that if there is something genetically wrong we have time to prepare. I would like to know what you other moms have decided to do. Does my Husbands or my age make a difference whether to get tested?

Re: Genetics test

  • We are testing just because. Won't really change things but will allow me more time to research and prepare.

  • We got tested with this pregnancy.  Age can have an impact.  Usually over 35 is considered higher risk for genetic problems.  So can family history and race.  We did less testing with my daughter because I was under 35 and there was nothing in our histories to indicate high risk.

  • We said no to the genetics and the NT. We are both young, I'm 27, he's 33, and have no risk factors. Our son is beautifully thriving with no issues and didnt see the point in more tests. I don't need to struggle to take the time off work and the results would just tell us what we already know - we are healthy.
  • My doctor suggested it for me to have piece of mind and I wouldn't have to do it with the next baby. I'm 32 and a FTM and will be 33 when my baby is born so baby #2 won't be for a little while.
  • First of all I think it's definitely a personal choice. I am over 35 but we've decided that testing is not for us. The tests could ease your mind if they come back with a low probability of any issues, but if the results say you have a high probability it doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with the baby and I don't want to add any unnecessary stress to the pregnancy. Plus, we've had two previous miscarriages and the fact that amnio testing carries even the slightest chance of miscarriage it's not worth the risk to us.
  • We had it done but it was only a blood test, nothing invasive. I'm 35 and a FTM so I went ahead and did it. I agree with PP that it is definitely a personal choice so don't let anyone pressure you. It surely eased my mind when everything came back negative (and as a plus, we found out at 13 weeks that we are having a girl!)
  • We said no to the genetic testing. The OB nurse was trying to push me to get the testing. My doctor just looked at me and said would you abort the baby based on the results, DH and I both said no. The doctor said testing isn't needed then.

I agree it's a personal choice. We never tested with my almost 4 year old even when the 20 week ultrasound showed pockets of spinal fluid around his brain. It was just a part of the developmental process which went away by 26 weeks, and he's been perfectly fine his whole life.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • Personal choice but we decides to do genetic testing since we are older me 39/hubby 42.
We wanted time to prepare if something did come up.

We had the Materni21 test. Tests for trisomy 13,18,21
Also had Fragil X and SMA done. They are all optional tests.

We talked to a genetic counselor that really helped us decide what testing we wanted to do.

  • We just did a blood test due to some risk factors. Totally up to you.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • We opted to do the tests for downs&trisomy even though we aren't high risk. It's completely a personal choice. The testing is a non-invasive blood test and an ultrasound (which was awesome!!!).
  • The general population (world wide) has a 2-4% probability for having some kind of issue (that includes everything from dwarfism, to missing a finger, to downs , etc ) It's very small. But everyone has some risk. Risk is never zero. So testing and not testing are both right answers. Just do what is best for you as you prepare for this amazing little one!

Thank you for saying this. I always worry when I see people saying, "Oh, we're young and healthy, no chance of a problem with our baby." It's a very small chance, sure. But there is always a chance.

This is so true.  Due to my ongoing situation, I was doing some research on Down's, and one source (i don't remember which) said taht while the risks are obviously MUCH higher for older moms, 80% of the babies born with Down's are born to younger moms - obviously b/c younger women have the vast majority of the babies.  So while everyone's risk as a young mother is much lower, it obviously still happens.
