CD moms... Before I buy all of this stuff

I'm dying to start my cd stash! I have all of this in my shopping cart for $107.41 and free shipping but I'm scared to go for it. It's all diaper covers, a wet bag, some snappis and a free one size cloth diaper. Should I add some AIOs? Or something else? Less of what I have? Help!!

  • @Lalamama81 I'm glad to hear that's all you used. I'm not sure why but that's all I foresee myself using. I'm going to get the pre folds later. Do you recommend a certain type?

@J&NL- good idea! I can still get free shipping that way too. Thanks.

  • Prefolds here too. I think I bought 30 and only ever used 15 for the entire first six months.

One more question.... Did you use snappis? About how many if so?
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • That's way more snappies than you need. You need like two.

  • And personally I think that's more covers than you need, too, but that's more debatable.

  • I'm known for losing things. Like I can have it in my hand and then its gone forever. I'll just get two packs. Ha! And I think I got excited with the colors and patterns too. ;-)

  • I had 4 covers and 2 snappis for the newborn phase to use with 12 prefolds and like 10-12 fitteds. And 3 wet bags. All of that was plenty washing every 2-2.5 days. GMD prefolds are def the best prefolds out there.

We got 9 newborn AIOs, 10 infant Gdiaper hybrids, 12 newborn pre folds, 2 size one covers, 2 fitteds, 6 small pockets, 2 snappis, 1 small wet bag and 2 large wet bags. I wanted to try everything before I created my OS stash and with twins I'm sure babies will be smallish and we will get some use out of the newborn size. I know everyone says prefolds are the way to go but I'm still not sold. With 2 babies I just can't imagine putting on 4 diapers per change.

  • Don't buy the snappis here... They seem pricey. Also, I'm happy to mail you a few pink ones if you want them. My doula gave me 10 or 12 of them a month ago, all in original packaging.

We owned 3 with my son and lost a few of them. I liked keeping one on each level of the house and an extra in the diaper bag, so 2 wouldn't have felt like enough to me.

PM me if you want those snappis!
  • @MamaFantastic - I just PM'd you with a couple questions.  Thanks so much!

  • Okay so for the newborn phase, all I need is about 12-15 prefolds and 3-4 covers? I still need to start my NB stash.

  • Thats a good question...  The few blogs I've read say about 6 covers or something like that.

  • Ok thanks! That takes some stress off of me a little bit. I was imagining buying a lot more.

  • Thanks! I was looking at the grovia bamboo prefolds and it seemed like after the newborn phase I could use them as a soaker.

  • Another question...

Once they grow out of the newborn size...then what?  Do you have one-size covers?  How many?  Something different?
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • How many do you go through a day after newborn stage?
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • colleen is spot-on here with her advice.  i exactly ditto everything she has said.  i had 6 covers last time and it felt like almost enough, but i washed every 2-3 days.  after changing 4-5 pee diapers using the same cover, you sort of want to just get a fresh cover anyway even if it might not necessarily have overt splotches of pee or poop on it.  i think i have like... 10 or 11 covers now, which is way overkill, but 5 of them were free to me, so i won't mind just swapping them out frequently throughout the day.  24 newborn prefolds was barely enough.  36 would be so much better (and that's what i have for this time around).

i'd say we probably still went through maybe 8-10 diapers a day for awhile.  i did laundry every 2 days for the first few months, and my loads were always full loads, so it's not like i was changing every 4 hours or anything.  the day diaper usage doesn't really taper off for awhile.  you just start dropping night diapers as baby sleeps in longer stretches, which is why the daily diaper usage decreases.
  • Is there a certain brand of prefolds that work well and are at a good price or should I go with the govia? Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack the post! I just don't want to start a new thread.

  • I'm glad you're asking questions too!! I have a thousand! Ask away....

  • @J&NL I can't comment on what types work well but I joined the FB group "buy, sell trade cloth diapers" and "newborn cloth diaper co-op". After looking around for a while I found the best prices through those sites, even for new diapers. Be careful- I'm now totally addicted to buying fluff 8-}

  • You ladies are so helpful to us newbies! I have so much reading just from this thread. What's everyone's opinion on pre owned diapers? I see a lot of people do it, but I can't help but think it's like buying used underwear.

www.greenmountaindiapers.com by a LANDSLIDE.  these are the cream of the crop.  don't bother with anything else, seriously.

(ETA fixed the link so it went straight to the prefold section of the website)
  • Love when experiences CD mamas give advice. So helpful to the newbies! I'm trying to learn as much as possible myself. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone asking questions and giving advice! :)
  • I have a question we are cding (first time) and from what I have read there are liners for inbetween babys skin and prefolds to keep baby dry is this something that is a must have or a matter of preference?

Again, take this with a grain of salt as I have never done this before. I did a ton of research on how to do an RLR strip and bleach disinfect on used diapers. I did get a few newborn ones used and I'll do that. Babies aren't in the newborn stage for that long so I thought it might be okay but honestly I'm not sure myself. I would also love to hear what more experienced ladies think. For my OS stash I think I'll only get new.

  • Heidiman After the newborn stage, many people switch to one-size pockets or other one-size diapers. Though if saving money is the priority, sticking with larger sizes of prefolds and covers works fine. I like pockets and fitteds much more than prefolds, but did have about half my stash be prefolds for the newborn stage since it's not that long and I didn't want a huge investment. When DS was bigger, I only sent pockets to daycare but used both pockets and fitteds+covers around the house.

I second Colleen regarding Thirsties covers for larger babies - size one up thorough 18 lbs and size 2 after that.

Re liners: we used the flimsy fleece liners for the newborn phase. I don't know that it was necessary, but I started doing it and since I had them, I kept at it. I'm not sure if I'll mess with them this time. It is another piece to deal with. I think I did it more to try to avoid any staining on my beautiful Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds than for benefit to the baby.

For my son, flushable liners (Bummis size large, purchased from Amazon) were an absolute must once he started solids. He never developed ploppable or scrapable poops like some (most?) kids so I would have had a collosal mess every time had we not used them. But you won't know what you're going to be dealing with on that front until the time comes and you see how your kid is.

  • GMD prefolds (I use preemie then NB) about 12-15. I had 4-6 covers. I think I liked thirsties the best. 2 snappis but 3 is good if u lose stuff lol I wouldn't get the liners. Most NB are way too sensitive for them and they're a pain and you still have to wash. I'd use a thin wash cloth for meconium days after birth if you're worried about staining. Otherwise, take them out. Not worth it.
  • @mamamonzo I didn't buy any pre owned ones but a co-worker gave me some she had used on DD and all of DDs 18-2t undies. I don't know how she cared for them, didn't want to look the gift horse in the mouth and all, but the PUL is definitely exceeded its life on a lot of them. I did think about buying pre-loved diapers and still don't see anything wrong with it if you clean them right. Know the diapers history and care regime if you buy used.
