Once when my LO was constipated, the Ped told me to give her a hot bath to soothe her then take her temp rectally to help stimulate things down there.  I was not able to see the poop though, I was just noticing that she was straining and in pain and nothing was happening.  GL!

A suppository would help soften what you can see and to help get things going.

Someone on my month board told us that her pediatrician recommended taking a q-tip with Vaseline on it and rubbing it around the anus. Apparently it helps stimulate the lower bowels and the Vaseline will help ease the poop out. Otherwise, prune or pear purée. 100% pear juice works great too. There's less cramping with pear juice than prune juice I guess.

We also got the Vaseline and stimulation advice from our pediatrician.  She also suggested a 1/4 teaspoon of prune juice and that worked like a charm for us.  We just put it in a couple ounces of formula and he pooped within an hour.

My kids had horrible constipation when we switched to formula from BM. They would scream and cry and be in such pain. our ped recommended using glycerin suppositories for babies. It works in less than 5 minutes and I would only squirt half the bottle. Once all the hard stuff was out, we could start altering their diet to keep it from happening again.

My ped also told me about the q-tip/vaseline solution but warned me against doing it too much. You don't want your LO to get used to going that way. I've also tried prune juice. [Ped told me I could give it to him without cutting in formula. Just an ounce or two if he'll take it.]

Ditto on the q-tip. We use pear juice instead of prune and works great too (and not as nasty tasting as prunes!)

Take your LO's legs at the knees and push gently but firmly up to his belly. Do this whenever you think of it--when you're changing his clothes, when he's playing on the floor, etc. "Bicycle pedal" his legs too--babies usually think that is fun! You can also push his knees up to his belly while he is trying to poop as well; this actually helps him get the poop out. The problem is that when babies are constipated they stiffen up when they are trying to poop when they need to relax. If you help him "unstiffen" it can really help. You can also rub his belly in a clockwise motion. This gets things moving down there.

Also, prunes are good, but any fruit with a pit--peaches, apricots--also work. Baby oatmeal is also good. You may want to avoid rice cereal, bananas, and apples, as these things can be constipating. Good luck! As you can maybe tell, I've had experience with the ol' stuck poo.

I was in a similar situation with my LO a few months ago. My pedi told me to take a Qtip dipped in vasaline and rub it around and gently insert it to help stimulate the bowel movements. Between that and a little watered down prune juice she went and felt much better afterwards. Hope this helped.. good luck!

I've used the liquid suppositories for LO, doc gave the ok.  She also gave us a perscrition for stool softener that we dissolve in her bottle if she gets backed up.. That take 1/2 day to a day to work so if she needs quicker relief than that I go the suppository route

I was told all fruits with P names - pears, prunes, peaches, etc

We do peach/pear combo puree every other day and it works like a charm. Be sure to avoid bananas!

I second all the answers and also strongly advise against using the qtip trick too often.

If it ever happens again, and he's almost able to push it out but it's "stuck" and he howls of pain and panic - here is what I do. Now I'm about to be graphic. You can chose not to read this.

I removed his diaper, and put a wipe over my hand. With my other hand I lift up his knees to his belly, and this is where it gets weird. He was... stretched out? Yeah well I gently pushed my fingers around his anus, and it helped his giant constipated poop pop out. Relief was instant. This is not something you do everyday, obviously.

DS hates prune juice and prunes seem to do nothing for him. He drinks a lot of water, and is still having a hard time going.

Lots of fibers, lots of water, lots of exercice and a lot of patience. You might need a stool softener eventually. We were prescribed an oral one, and I hate using it but it helps DS so I suck it up and give it to him. Good luck!
