Moms of early risers, come in

Does your kid wake up early too? Like between 430 and 5? What do you do with them that early in the day?

Not how do I get her to sleep later (cause that ain't happening), but how do I fill the pre-dawn hours? If it were up to her, she'd eat snacks and watch TV for two hours. No breakfast, just snacky foods. It's like she goes to bed as a toddler, wakes up as a stoned college student, and doesn't revert to toddler until after a morning nap.

  • I'm fine with morning TV too, just not two hours of it. 30min seems like enough to me but it's creeping to longer and longer in the mornings. That's why I feel like I have to up my game on what else there is to do in the mornings.

  • Mine doesn't get up until 6:30/7, but on the weekends we stay upstairs so everyone else in the house can sleep in. I get his sippy and a banana from downstairs then get him out of bed and we snuggle and watch a little TV. There is a basket of toys in our room that he only plays with on the weekends, so he's not bored with them, and he'll usually be satisfied to play and drink and snuggle and explore Mommy and Daddy's room for about two hours or so, then he gets restless and by then everyone is up.

DS gets up anywhere between 4:30 and 6am. During the week, it actually works out. DH goes to work early and I've adjusted my hours so I go in early and leave early. We honestly leave him in bed as long as possible. If he's talking to himself or running around his crib and its super early, we let him be. If he's standing there whining or crying, we'll go get him. On the weekend, same thing. And once we finally go get him, we pull him into bed with us for some cartoons, milk and dry cereal in a cup. We look forward to it because its the only hour we have of snuggle time anymore.

ETA: This is the extent of TV time for DS. Besides this, the only time he really sits and watches TV is when he's sick.

Albert was waking up anytime between 5 am and 6:30 am.  We've finally gotten him to sleep into around 6:30 am to 7:30 am.  After I weaned him, I would just lay him down, put his pacifier in his mouth, rub his back for a bit, then leave for a few minutes.  Now he just dozes and is up and ready to go when we get up around 6:30.  It's really nice.

Edited:  This technique was in the Ferber book.

If she wakes up before 6, she has to stay in her bed. I give her some quiet books and toys to play with if it seems clear that she's not going back to sleep. I am not against morning TV at all, but I usually try to save it until the evening when I'm making dinner and she's usually cranky. At least she's pretty happy in the mornings.
  • If she's up before 6 I give her a bottle and some plastic books and a few small toys and then she's content for a good 45 minuets.

  • If DD wakes up that early she stays in bed. I don't want to make a habit of it. The earliest we go in is 6. She has gotten up that early maybe once or twice & usually falls back to sleep within a half hour. I will go in & change her diaper & give her a sippy of water & her pacifier. This happens a lot when we stay at my moms. She sleeps horribly. Ugh
  • Mine eat cereal and watch PBS Kids (mostly they just want Daniel Tigers Neighborhood or Curious George) in their little chairs while I enter the land of the living, aka have my coffee.  We get up between 6 and 7.

I'm fine with the morning TV watching obviously.
This. I give her some juice and fruit while I attempt to become human and drink coffee. Once I'm awake we usually have eggs and toast around 730-8 and start our day.
