Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Intro/questions (older child mentioned)

Hi,
I'm usually a lurker, but I had a natural miscarriage on 12/15 at 6 weeks and thought this board might offer some support. My doctor said he doesn't want me to come in for a blood test until I've stopped bleeding but didn't give me much information beyond that. Is there any general amount of time I should expect this to take? (Still bleeding a decent amount.) Also, is it bad to have a glass of wine while this is happening? I know I'll get lots of "you're pregnant" assumptions by my in-laws if I don't drink at Christmas and I'm not really in the mood to continuously defend myself (know one knows I was pregnant).

Finally, will there be any way to figure out what might have happened when I go to the doctor? I know things can be unexplained , but I had placental abruption with my son which caused him to come early (34 weeks) and was warned this may affect my chances of getting pregnant again.

Thanks ladies.

  •         I'm sorry for your losses. I also just had a NMC. Mine was at 7 weeks. It took me about eight days to stop bleeding, then a spotted for one or two days after that.
If you want to drink a glass or two on Christmas I think you will be fine. I sipped a glass of wine at my DH's work party while I was still bleeding, and I was fine. The only consequence was that someone asked me if I was pregnant, because I wasn't drinking enough. So if any lesson can be learned it's, "Drink more wine."
If you had a NMC at home it may be difficult for your doctor to tell you what happened. Did they run any tests? My doctor did a series of blood tests one when I started bleeding, and one each week until I got down low enough that she decided it was okay to stop monitoring. I also had an internal US which confirmed I had a blighted ovum. This was done before I had passed everything.

  • Thank you for replying. My doctor didn't run any tests - didn't even want to see me so I was fairly certain I wouldn't get any answers. I guess because it's my first they aren't as concerned. I should clarify that I didn't lose my first - he was hospitalized for awhile but okay. I am just nervous about staying pregnant in the future because of that placental abruption and this miscarriage. Thanks again.
