June 2014 Moms

I need y'all to calm me down.

I cannot shake this feeling I could be having twins. It is completely irrational but I just can't shake it!
There was only one baby at my 7 week ultrasound and the doctor hasn't heard a second heartbeat but he hasn't really looked all that hard. I'm kind of thin ish so they were actually able to hear it at 9 weeks.

What's got me freaking is this weird sense. It's like when I knew my first was a girl. I KNEW it.
Also I have been about 10 times more sick this time.
I'm measuring big and have already gained twelve pounds. But only in the belly! I would be in my normal pants if I could even get close to buttoning them haha. My doctor actually rechecked my dates and due date at my last visit due to size.
I feel crazy amounts of movement since about 10 weeks sometimes on two sides, and I know the baby isn't big enough for that yet!
To top it off I did the dumb thing and googled it and read that a ton of women have a hidden twin that they find at the anatomy scan even if they had an early ultrasound.

Please tell me I'm crazy! I'm terrified to have twins! I mean, yay two babies and all but, the cost!!

  • I gained 12 lbs in my first trimester with my last baby, & it was only 1 baby. I think they would have seen that its tins especially at 7 weeks.
  • Sometimes you get feelings you just can't shake :-) don't get worked up, take a minute for you and smile.

  • I sometimes get that feeling, but there was one baby at each US, including my NT scan which is fairly involved.  I just shrug it off, because if there are two in there, not a lot I can do other than buy another crib and seriously re-evaluate our finances!  People have been commenting on my size way earlier this time around, and I am bigger, but a lot of that is because my body (and yours) remembers the right shape/how to do this.  Try to relax and when you get those feelings/thoughts, just acknowledge that you can't plan for everything and ask your doc to check more closely for a second heartbeat next appt.

  • I gained quite a bit if weight with my son. By the end of the first trimester I was up 15 lbs. I had little nausea and was eating all of the bad food in sight.

  • My twins were clear as day less than a minute into my first sonogram at 6 weeks. I'm also 15 weeks today and not showing, so your body's "schedule" of when it begins to physically show may just be ahead of what you were expecting. I've also had no morning sickness with my twin pregnancy so far, so I don't think excessive sickness is necessarily a sign. I'd just go with what the doc is telling you and try to relax and enjoy. :)

  • Highly improbable :-/ At my 7w ultrasound there were clearly two sacs and fetal poles. I suppose it's possible yours are identical and sharing the same sac, but both probably would have been seen on your early ultrasound. They're so small at the beginning that its harder to miss two sacs or two poles in a sac.

Sickness etc. isn't a good way to determine the number of babies. I was really sick till about week 10 but have been fine since. I have friends who carried only one but were sick the whole time, some even hospitalized because of it. If you really think there's two you could bring it up to your OB. Or just wait till your 20 week scan as two would be pretty hard to miss.

  • My Twins were very clear at my 6 week ultrasound and I will also say that I am now 16.5 weeks and I have not gained any weight and I am 12 pounds under pre-pregnancy so I don't think weight has anything to do with twins or not. I would just try and relax and enjoy your pregnancy!
