A totally random question about tearing during childbirth...

So this really is very random seeing as I gave birth almost 2 years ago but for some reason the thought popped into my head tonight and google wasn't helpful in answering my question. Basically, DS was born vaginally and I ended up with a 2nd degree tear but I swear it was a tear that went on a diagonal off to the side. Every bit of info I've found on the internet is a tear straight down...but mine was definitely not straight down from the looks and feel of it. Is this even possible? Or was my doctor just cross eyed while stitching me up?

(told you it was random!)

  • I'm sure it's possible for it to tear diagonally. Thanks to DD's off-the-charts big head I had a 2nd degree/ borderline 3rd degree tear and several smaller tears too. I had so much stitching, it's a total mess down there.

  • I also had a 2nd degree tear with DD that was definately diagonal. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that if I have more children I won't tear again! Not sure if that is realistic.

  • For those if you who tore I'm wondering did your dr or midwife use any lubrication on baby's head and or help stretch you?

I only ask because I know my midwives did both with all three if my kids and even with off the charts head sizes and delivering my 1st and 2nd at 9 & 8 cm I never tore.

My midwife did everything she could from perineal massage to warm compresses the entire 2 hours of pushing. Some people have more resilient and stretchy tissue than others, just like some people get horrible stretch marks while others get none.

  • I am SO thankful to be one if the lucky ones then. !

  • With my first I tore up instead of back. It was tiny, 2 stitches, which the OB called "cosmetic" lol. With my 2nd, who was bigger, no tearing. So yes, you can tear in different directions, and just b/c you tore last time doesn't mean it will the same or worse the next time!

I don't remember the doctor doing anything to prevent tearing other than telling me when to push, or not to push.

I'll have to ask about that next time.

  • I didn't tear during delivery but the ob had to do a manual placenta removal and THAT made me tear. I'm not sure which way it went but there were more stitches than they could tell me.
  • I tore, but it was only 1st degree and I was only pushing for 12 minutes. Doctor tried to slow it down and did add some lubrication to aid, but LO was coming out fast no matter what anything or anyone else said or did! :)
