Heart palpitations

The last couple of days, I've been feeling like my heart skips a beat. I usually only feel it a handful of times throughout the day and I'm never stressed or worked up, usually relaxed and calm. I don't get dizzy or light headed and it doesn't affect my daily life in any way. I've been told and read that it's common to get palpitations during pregnancy due to the heart working harder, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?? I'm 16 wks and see my dr on Jan 2 for my next check up.

Re: Heart palpitations

  • I've only had 1 but I guess that still counts as experiencing it. Weirdest feeling ever

  • I went over this with my midwife last week. She said it was normal as log as my pulse/BP stay in range. Unsettling as hell though.

  • I have never heard about it happening during pregnancy. That is just me though. Have you ever been checked for MVP (Mitral valve prolapse) ? My mother had it. She didn't find out until she was 20. (Had me at 22) Was suppose to be on medication for it.

She lived with it for years.

She did pass away at 36. She did not die from the MVP.

I would ask your doctor. Never hurts to ask. I have heard that woman that have it, during pregnancy they have more energy due to more blood flow. The pregnacy would not hurt the condition.

Don't mean to scare you. Just food for thought if you are feeling it all the time. With the extra blood flow you could be feeling it more.

I have a very small case. They said if they were not looking for it, they would not have seen it. (I got checked because of my mother) I am not taking meds and just watch my weight.
  • I am having twins. I have experienced this several times. And I did ask my doctor about it. She said it was normal as long as it didn't happen too often. I have a friend who just had twins and she experienced it also and her doctor told her the same thing.

  • I have MVP but it's not severe. I freaked out when they told me but the doctor explained that it is actually very common for women in their twenties. I have felt these heart flutters a lot more now that I'm pregnant but doctor days all is well. I wouldn't worry too much about it but definitely a good idea to out on your list of things to discuss with your doctor.
My outlook is that it's good to have these symptoms because I feel it is confirmation that my body is changing like it should. I'm habitually optimistic though. :-)
  • I've felt this too..

  • My doc has told me it's fine. I've had it on and off ever since 8 weeks! Nothing I can do that brings it on or stops it.. It just happens that we notice it sometimes cuz our hearts r working harder to bump all the more blood
  • I have had this too.  My doctors say it is from increased hormones and blood flow.  I also get bad anxiety (strictly physical, not thinking about anything in particular), caused by hormones, and this is a symptom of that.  As long as your pulse is normal you should be OK.  My midwives suggested B complex and Omega 3s for the anxiety and it has really helped.
