Sippy cup/straw cup

Has anyone introduced one yet? Or btdt moms, when did you introduce one successfully? My lo doesn't take a bottle well and I would like to start a cup soon. Any tips would be great! Thanks

DS was using a sippy cup when he was 9-12 months, and probably won't be introducing LO to one until closer to then. DS didn't like it at first and just wouldn't use one... I had to gradually introduce it. One day I told him we were getting rid of all the bottles because he was a big boy now and could use a big boy cup.. He helped me bag them all up. The straw came after the sippy cup for him

Eta- 9-12 months, not 9-10. When I said gradually introduce it I meant it lol. He hated it at first

  • 9 to 12 months was when he got the hang of it. I introduced it around 7 months.

  • I don't want to threadjack but I have question to BTDT moms.

Did anyone skip the sippy cups altogether and go straight to regular cups?

I've read that recommendation in a few books now.

    I tried that.

But then I decided I was tired of mopping. Now that he is a toddler I let him use cups of water. DS1  still uses sippies.

Yes, give a 9+ month old a regular cup. Let us know how that goes. Hope you have no carpet and love to mop.

OP: We introduced around 6 months. They really didn't start using one until around 9-10 though.

Thank you. That's why I asked. I have no experience so I was hoping to gather some from others that do.

  • My first refused bottles for a while around 4-6mo and so I bought a couple of the soft spout ones hoping he'd take those. No go.

I put water in one around 9mo for him to play with and well, he played with it. He got the hang of them around 12-13mo. We had to switch the hard spout sippies around 2? I think. He had figured out how to dump the contents in the soft spout ones (turn upside down and push).

He didn't get good with open cups until well after 2yo. Now at 3.5yo, he drinks out of open cups all the time and with meals, etc but you can't beat the convenience of a sippy when out and about.

One year. IMHO it's too early.

  • @Soliel3 is that the one Avent makes? If not, Avent has cups that aren't sippy cups that are supposedly spill proof too. I'll see if I can find a link... ETA: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006GYLL8Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1387835274&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40
There are a bunch of different ones, an As Seen On TV one, Sassy makes one, Boon I think makes one. I haven't gotten to the point to figure out which one yet :D

  • I am probably going to start offering a silly cup with bm after the holidays. Even if it takes awhile for him to catch on it's better than trying to push bottles on him, I think. I've pretty much given up on that front.

I tried the avent "non sippy cup" one with my first and it was really awkward and was even hard for a toddler to manipulate, much less a baby. When I tried it I felt it took way more pressure than a baby would use. Unless they improved upon the one they made in 2011 I'd try a different brand. At the time, avent was the only one I saw. So hopefully there are some better choices out there now.
