MOTN inconsolable crying

DS is almost 13 months old, and this is the first night he has been absolutely inconsolable. I should probably consider myself lucky. But we are at my in-laws, and he has been crying for the past hour and probably waking everyone else up in the house. Bottle (which I am trying to get rid of, but that is another story), rocking, rubbing his back, letting him lay with us, none of this is working. He will only stop crying momentarily if we walk around with him while he points to everything and says "This!" But then he starts crying again. We can't really let him CIO because we're in a house full of people, but he has been up and crying on and off for over an hour. He's obviously tired and doesn't have a fever. I'm almost at the point of putting him in the car and driving him around because he always stops crying that way. Ideas? Has anyone else experienced this? Maybe he's old enough to be freaked out that he's not at home in his own bed?

Even younger babies get distracted when they are sleeping at new places. At 13 months old your LO probably is very curious, excited, and nervous about being in a new place. If walking around and letting him look at stuff calms him down I would probably do that for a little while and then try to get him to sleep.  He might just need some more adjustment time.

Traveling with kids is hard. ETA: I hope you guys are able to get some rest!

  • My 13 month old has done this at least 4 times in the last 2 weeks. At least 2 hours each of those nights.
One night I tried getting him back to sleep for 2 hours then DH took him to our basement and they watched TV for two hours until DS fell asleep at 6am.
DS went back to the crib at 6:15 and was up by 7:30.

It was a rough day that day.

I suspect that DS is going to cut his molars soon. He's been gnawing on his fingers a lot this past month.

If it's not teeth, then I don't know what.
    Good luck.

  • DD has done this twice. Once at home, once at my parents. The first time it lasted for over an hour. We took her to the dr the next day to make sure it wasn't an ear infection. We chalked it up to teething pain and gave her some ibuprofen.
  • DD has had some off night lately too.  Nothing for quite that long, but we've definitely had our fair share of difficult moments.  She's cutting her second molar.  grrrr.  I just wish they would all come in at once.  We've been giving ibuprofen at night.

  • H had a night like this last week. When we travel, his first night away is ALWAYS a shitshow. I hope he settled down and you all got some rest!

  • I'd be inclined to think teething or a nightmare and then when he woke up, he realized that he was in a strange place. O has only ever screamed like that when she had an ear infection or was cutting a tooth.

  • I read that around this age they start to have real nightmares that can scare them - that's happened to B in the last month.  Also make sure it's not a reaction to the MMR vaccine...the reaction can be delayed by up to a week...

  • This has been happening to us too, with a mix of inconsolable and, eventually, hysterical crying on the way to bed as well. Last night, she cried hysterically for an hour - hitting me, screaming for daddy.  DH took over and she instantly stopped.

For us the crying started at the beginning of this month. Like you, we noticed it when we were staying at someone else's house. We did all of the things you described here as well - and eventually assumed she must have an ear infection. We left the ER with a diagnosis of crankiness. She fell asleep in the car, thank god...and that put an end to that particular s#$%show. Since then, she has been getting up twice a night. On the second waking started giving her a bottle...so basically we now have a mid-night freak out a few times a week, and a regular going to bed s#$%show every night.

The only thing that has worked for me (because DH is the current favorite and has magical powers over LO...and I'm mud, by comparison), is placing her in a sitting position between my legs, facing outwards, breaking out a picture book and pointing to things while I rub her back or feet. She will start pointing at things too...and will, sometimes, topple over and go to bed.

...but..most of the time she screaming in our shared bedroom, and is only consoled by DH. Her top teeth aren't fully in...and there are no signs of her molars. I'm assuming that teething is the primary cause of her stress. Maybe your situation is similar?

  • V has been waking screaming at lest once a week at night. I go in right away bc you can tell its not just a regular cry. When I get there he is flailing and screaming, even if I try to pick him up. He hits and tries to get away. Once he realizes it's me holding him his stops and lets me console him. In his case I think it's a nightmare.

When I have been away with him he wakes crying and then does the pointing thing and wanting to play. In that case I think it's being in a new place.

Could be any of those or It might be teething. Molars were really touch. Canines are even worse right now.

  • So weird we are all having it at the same time. Emma did it last week! Screaming, and wouldnt open her eyes. Just kept kind of twitching her head to the scream of Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahh! Ahh!! It was so scary for us.

  • We walked around, played, watched some Curious George, had a bottle, and then he finally went back to sleep an hour and a half later. I think it's a combination of teething and a growth spurt. Luckily everyone said they hardly heard him crying, so it just bothered me and DH. We took a family nap at the in-laws Christmas party today. :)
