Baby came early!! Any necessities advice??

Hi mommies!!

I am a first time mom and I am excited to say that my LO is here but unfortunately she didn't make it to full term and we are unsure of exactly how long she will be in the NICU for but I am hoping and wishing not too long..however she was not due till February 3rd and our baby shower was for the beginning of January after the holidays so we were trying to hold off on going crazy buying things to see what we would still be needing...we have a few things like the crib a few clothes blankets glider but not nearly enough! Plus I'm thinking its possible she made need premie onesie etc we've only been buying newborn and up (she weight 4lbs 8oz now) DH are going to try our best btwn being here with at the hospital with our LO to get some things prepared at home before she's released as well. Is there any necessities that you would recommend that helped you all out a lot so far? Or just little things you didn't think you'd need and ended up needing? Besides diapers and wipes of course! Lol thank you ladies!

  • I second the gas drops. When in doubt, give the gas drops!
They dont need much though. I would suggest having a thermometer, diaper cream, and a nasal aspirator ( i love the nosefrida)

    Congratulations to you!

  • Congrats! Umm yes to the gas drops! If you do the Simethicone(Mylecon) you can give it before every feed. You really do need a sleeping area for upstairs and downstairs if you have a split level. We have a swing downstairs(lifesaver!), a rock and play in our room for night, and he has his crib in his room(we have not transitioned to his crib yet). Lots of diapers, and tons of love. Don't stress too much things will just fall into place:)
  • I found a swing has helped me out, I am home alone with the baby a lot and it was nice to put him down in his swing while I would go to the bathroom or get something to eat. Also helped me during a few fussy times as well. Receiving blankets are good to use for swaddling your little one. Congratulation and all the best to your little family :-)
  • Can't use a swing or any of those things until baby is full term or after according to our OT at NICU.  My twins arrived at 27w (due date was today).  Need clothes for NICU which is snaps or zippers only, no over the head.  Diapers when you get home, but they provide all while there.  Gas drops are good.  Preemies are known to have reflux.  Wipes, nose frida, saline for nose, a noise maker of some sort (NICU is loud and they get used to the noise).  Diaper cream is good.  Some baby wash and wash clothes/towels.  A couple swaddling blankets- I like actual swaddling blankets because the receiving blankets I got were too small to swaddle well.  Lastly, a breast pump, nipple cream, etc if you are breast feeding or bottles if you are FF or EP. Congrats and good luck!!!

I agree with what people are saying so far.  The only thing I would add might be a RNP because preemies usually have trouble with reflux and the incline helps with that.   Good luck!

Thank you! What is an RNP? :)

  • Also nipple cream for you, receiving blankets and burp clothes, and washcloths. Bum cream, baby lotion etc.. Lots of sleepers cause you will change them constantly and usually at showers people give the cuter "going out" outfits not necessarily the comfy staying home ones.
  • If you are bottle feeding, hand them on hand. And be sure you clean/sanitize them before you bring LO home. Congrats! I hope the big homecoming is soon!
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • We had our little man early too! here's what helped us! Swing! Gas drops, gripe water , pampers premies, lots of jammies! A wubba nub pacifier. The little gowns that scrunch up on the bottom are super nice! Also onsies with the mittens that told over. And frozen premade food you can throw in the oven or microwave. My family was awesome about bringing stuff for us.. Really helped with the first few weeks home.
  • Little remedies saline spray and a nasal aspirator.
  • Perfect, thanks for all the recommendations ladies!! I cannot wait to bring her home!! :)

  • Don't know if this was mentioned or not above (too much to read) but we loved Aden&Anais muslin swaddling blankets! And a sleep sheep sound machine. A baby carrier or sling.  Congratulations :)

  • I get a ton of use out of the snug a bunny bouncer seat. I put it all over the house depending on where I'm going to be for a while, he likes napping in it. My favorite swaddle was made by moby wrap and he sleeps for longer stretches warm so I got a lot of use out of the halo fleece sleep sacks

  • advise; make sure to take care of yourself so you can take care of your baby.If you are pumping make sure you pump every time the baby eats to get a good supply including overnights (set an alarm).Mine was 6 weeks early with 2 weeks in NICU and they had me pump every 3 hours with one 4-5 hour stretch if i needed extra sleep. You will need some preemie clothes but not a huge stash
stuff; we love our rocknplay, sleep sacks
  • Pamper swaddlers, my son was 5 weeks early and also born 4 lbs 8oz 19in. those are the only diapers that fit him snuggly.
Don't buy a lot of preemie clothes. My son spent two weeks in the nicu and by the time he left he was too long for preemie clothes.
Get a couple sleep sacks. The fleece kind with the wrap around blanket if you live where it's cold.
Have bottles on hand even if you plan to breast feed, the doctor may want you to fortify your expressed milk with iron or special preemie formula. My son does well with platex nursers and has never had any nipple confusion between the paci, bottle, or breast. Swaddle blankets and burp cloths x5 . Calendula cream or aquaphor and buttpaste.
Hats! I underestimated the hats. Most are too big or don't fit right. The only ones I like are the knot hats by baby gap. They fit his little head and stay on. We have three and that's enough.
It's easy to go over board on clothes but try not too. It's such a waste-they grow so fast! And you'll be so tired all you'll want to put them in are the zipper onsies cause they're so easy.
