Diaper rash

Exciting I know. I seem to be winning the battle with diaper rash but losing the war. Dd gets rash I treat it and it goes away. She has a clear bottom for a day or maybe 2 but then she gets another rash. Is this just par for the course because her skin is still so sensitive?

I've tried different diapers, wipes, creams, she gets tons of naked time. I'm not really sure what else to do. We currently use butt paste and aquaphor at night. Desitin makes her cry.

So anybody have any suggestions of anything else to try. Should I just buy stock in aquaphor??

Re: Diaper rash

  • Have you tried breast milk when it starts acting up? Might be worth a shot. Coconut oil can help too. Not only is it awesome for cry irritated skin but because it's oil it helps keep the moisture off LO's skin.

  • Could it be something other than just normal diaper rash? I know one of my girls when they were little got a yeast rash and that took a totally different kind of med that had to be prescribed.
  • The little guy I used to watch would get a rash if you didn't change him within 30 seconds of him going. That's all I have to add.

  • @emr22 yea I thought it could be yeast too but it doesn't look like what's described. So if I can't get it under control i will call ped and just have them check.

@zever000 I did just pick up more coconut oil today so I'm going to give that a try.
  • The only thing that's helped us is a&d ointment. I put a little on at the first sight of any redness and by the next diaper change he's fine. I was using the butt paste and that made him so much worse. Now we have no issues and haven't had any real diaper rash since.

  • I battled diaper rash w one of the babies for MONTHS. It was open, sore and bleeding. Awful.

I didn't think it was yeast, but at a pedi visit, we gave it a shot and nystatin closed all the open wounds in a day. It was awesome. Once we got that under control, we changed him every time there was even a bit of a shart. He'd poop close to a dozen times a day and it would make the rash flare.

We also stopped using wipes and just use wet paper towels. The thing though that helped though was him not pooping a dozen times a day. Somewhere around 4mo his digestive system got it together and he poops every 2-3 days now. And the rash is gone.

  • I swear by coconut oil. It heals all. Also, wipe LO down well with water and let her air dry. Apparently the dampness of the wipes and not properly drying can be a cause for rash.

I hope she gets some relief soon.

  • Thanks ladies. I think I'm going to try just using wet washclothes instead of wipes. Hopefully it starts to clear up.
  • I use pampers sensitive wipes and always make sure she is dry before putting the next diaper on. If she has only peed a little, I don't use a wipe at all. We use butt paste at night & dc uses it before naps, no exceptions. At the first hint of redness I use aquaphor.
We've been lucky and have only had 1 tiny stint of rash...maybe what I do is why lo hasn't had it, or maybe she isn't as sensitive as yours. I hope your lo clears up soon!
  • My doctor gave us an anti fungal cream. Worked so well. I'm not a doctor so I can't tell you to do that lol.. But it worked for us. Also, air dry really well

  • We use Earth Mama Angel Baby butt balm and love it.  DS has super sensitive skin and this seems to protect him better than anything else.  Like pp, even if he is not red we put it on before bed and any diaper he will be in for a while.  I also put it on at any hint of redness.  I also pull the wipe out (honest co) right when I lay him down to be sure it doesn't have too much wetness when I use it.  Then I keep a cloth diaper on the changing table and pat him dry before I put the diaper back on.. just to be sure.

  • DS had a pretty bad case of diaper rash a while back. Make sure you don't put any cream on until it is completely dry, otherwise you are just locking in moisture. Also we used my peri bottle from the hospital and would fill with warm water and clean him that way after he had a poopy diaper then pat and air dry. That saved us from irritating it more with wiping. Also did a bath with just baking soda and water and did not rinse it off. That made a kind of "film" on it that kept it from getting worse and seemed to help with pain. Also the doc told is to use some OTC yeast infection cream just in case and then diaper cream over that. After we did these things it cleared up really fast. Good luck!

  • We switched to Boudreaux Butt Paste from Desitin and it has worked well for us.  It has cleared up Dylan's diaper rash and it tends to be a lot less messy.  I think Desitin has something in it that makes it "sooth" on contact (maybe similar to bengay, but weaker, obviously) and maybe she doesn't like that feeling.
Also, just to echo PPs, don't use wipes on diaper rash, just a wet cloth.
Hope your LO feels better soon!
