April 2014 Moms

CD Mommas, a question from the uninitiated.

So I've been seeing a general consensus that one size diapers are not really the best for newborns, and that prefolds/ flats are better and just using them with a cover. My question is this, when the flat/ prefold is inside the cover, do you fasten it in/ onto the baby a particular way? My itty bitty stash only contains two one size pockets and a newborn AIO, so I'm having trouble visualizing loose cloth inside a cover.

  • You can get snappis. They sell them in like 5 or 10 packs on amazon. They work great.

  • When you're using prefolds or flats you can either attach them to the baby (with pins or a snappi) or just fold them up, lay them in the cover, and put the cover on the baby just like you would and aio.

  • I highly recommend a snappi or diaper pin, as baby poop is very runny.

  • Does anyone use boingos? I think they look cool but I've heard mixed reviews.

I have not but my Aunt who had a baby the year before last did. She did say it was nice that you only needed one size but she still prefers snappis.

  • Yeah it seems like one thing would be easier than two things.

  • I do like that the snappi seems to hold up the middle better but at the newborn stage it's not like they're climbing the walls yet...
  • Another option is fitteds witha cover. My Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds have snaps. I use a combo of these and prefolds (with a snappi) for the newborn stage (each with a cover on top). I would love to have all fitteds, but they were like $11 each compared to like $1.50 each for prefolds.

  • I think I am going to get some fitteds, prefolds and AIO diapers to start out the newborn stage. I want to see what works best on the baby and what I prefer- I was going to just order a 24pk BumGenius bundle, but I read the same as you. Green mountain Diaper website has taught me a few things about different folds and using snappis and such. The thought of prefolds aren't as daunting to me now! :)

Also learned a little from the cloth diaper whisperer, but they seem to push the BG.
  • It's a good idea to try out different things! Remember you can rent diapers, too.

I do wish we had done a rental with DD. I have quiet a few diapers we don't use because DH loathes them (because they are rear loaders). But they are getting donated so it's not all bad.
