Going Home Clothing

Hey hey ladies,

I tried searching for info, but apparently I suck at TB searches. ANYWAYYYY -

For the going home outfit, can it be anything you want? I was kind of confused because I know we need to be careful of his umbilical  and I wasn't sure if a full body outfit would cause any kind of distress to it.

Are you gals doing onesies or two pieces (snap shirt/diaper/pants)? I guess this also applies to the first few weeks after as well considering that it may take  a little for the cord to fall off.

Re: Going Home Clothing

  • We will probably do a fleece onsie that is not too tight. It is freezing in CT in late February. We did with my son and had no problem with his umbilical cord.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yeah, we are in central NY and it can be really cold here too, so I wanted to have him bundled but wasn't sure which route would be the best to go.

  • We just had a regular onsies outfit, it doesn't need to be anything special. The cord isn't very big and didn't seem to get in the way of any outfits.

  • I'm a clueless FTM personally, but in all that I've read, the list of "going home outfit" never says anything about requirements so I'd guess whatever works. Our plan is a cute little puppy outfit that is a onesie with pants and a matching hat. It's a 0-3 months so he'll be swimming in it, but it's too cute to pass up. Who knows, maybe he'll be huge to begin with.
  • Are you guys going to bring a NB size and/or a 0-3 mos size too? I'm thinking of packing two or three different outfits in different sizes just in case some are too small or big.

For right now we are thinking two different outfits one sized smaller and one that is 0-6 just in case.

  • Even if your baby is more than 8 lbs (all 3 of mine have been so far), the NB size still fits them for the journey home, since they usually lose some weight from fluids, etc. right after birth. The 0-3 mos works, but can be a bit big until they reach 10 lbs. So long as the outfit isn't too tight (which I've never heard of being an issue), it won't but the umbilical cord. The main thing is to just fold the diaper so it doesn't rub--though some NB diapers have a notch carved out for that reason.

I personally like the footed sleepers in the beginning because they are easy.

  • My birth class teacher recommended trying to find those little nightgown type things that have the string or snaps at the bottom. Not for going home specifically, but for the first few weeks. Not as cute, but she says they make life easier for mom and baby to change them. No trying to get little legs into pants, etc. And they aren't too tight for the belly button. she told me that it's an old fashioned thing, and she must be right, considering I've never seen one on a baby outside of 1953. Still, I'm thinking of it. Just for at home, when we don't need to look cute of course.

  • I have the cutest tigger onsie (complete with tigger ears on the hood) that LO will be coming home in :)
  • Mine are all winter babies so they've worn sweater one piece outfits. They aren't tight enough to irritate the cord stump.

Those nightgown things are awesome. That's what our kids slept in a lot for the first couple months and they were great for midnight diaper changes :)

We hated these! They kept riding up and babies legs/feet got cold!

  • I brought 2 potential "going home" sleepers and a couple other sleepers. DS1 peed/pooped/puked on 2 sleepers as we were loading him up to go home from the hospital. I was very thankful to have packed more with him... lol He was also an 8 lb 4 oz baby and fit into newborn.

  • I'm putting baby girl in a cute onesie with a pair of leggings with matching hat for her coming home outfit and if needed the snow suit. But we usually get our first snow in Feb and have no heat in the car (DH is supposed to fix that before baby gets her but we shall see if it actually happens).

I was going to get NB and 0-3, but it's looking like I'll be getting NB and preemie size. We're getting a fleece sleeper. The first few weeks will be a lot of sleepers, onesies after the cord falls off, and side-snap shirts.

  • My plan is to bring a NB and 0-3. I haven't chosen my NB outfit yet, but my 0-3 will be one my sister got for us. It's very possible LO could be huge... Babies run big in my family, (dad and his siblings were 10lb+, I was 9 lb) plus I have GD. If I don't pick a cute outfit in NB size, I have plenty of cute simple fleece sleepers that will work just fine. I'll probably take extra clothes too, just because I'm weird like that. (I ALWAYS overpack!)

    Here's our 0-3 outfit.

  • Thanks guys! Sounds like a fleece sleeper will be what we will use to bring home baby in.
