June 2014 Moms

I told my boss! Now how do I tell coworkers?

This is my second week in this job I adore. Belly is popping. My boss was amazing and excited and such a sweet guy. I feel tons better.

So how do I tell the other folks? None of us have close individual relationships yet, so telling them individually seems weird. Email seems weird too. We don't have team meetings.

  • I'm kind of in the same boat - I will be watching this thread for suggestions!

  • I did cupcakes with pink and blue frosting.  I am good friends with some of my coworkers so they loved it, but I feel like some kind of food in the break room with a note that says you are expecting could work for you too... that way it will be in their hands as to if they come up and congratulate you, chat with you about it, or not say anything.  Plus, if you just sneak it in the break room, you don't have to be the center of attention...  you can just let them figure it out as the day goes on.

Just a thought! :) I totally get that it's a weird situation since you are new!

  • Our dept is huge -- 80 people. But I work with a team if about 8. We're all spread out all over the building. Hmmm.

Hmm yeah that is a little more difficult... We had a girl email out an announcement.  That seemed to go over fine as well.

  • A coworkers wife was pregnant and he brought in cookies and took everyone out for beers. Two weeks later I brought in chocolates but only officially told the people in my office and those who stopped by from the other office. I'm assuming word will find a way to get around without my taking the guys to a bar. DH walked a box of tidbits around his office.

  • I was in the same boat...I told my bosses but didn't know how to spread the news myself because I really hate being the center of attention. I casually mentioned it in conversation to one woman and now I think almost everyone has come into my office to congratulate me, so you could always do that. Funny story...the same day I mentioned it, the staff accountant who works with me, and who would be covering my work while I was out for maternity leave, announced that she is due in mid-May! Talk about a little bit of a shock for everyone involved lol.

  • I am in a similar situation. I've been here a few months, but we are NOT a social department at all. (It can be a week or more before I exchange so much as a "hello" with the guy who sits directly across from me.)

After I told my boss and her boss (who I deal with a lot) I just told people as I had conversations with them. So the admins who are super-friendly knew right away, the two people who are friendly with me found out shortly after ... and everyone else is finding out when they find out.

The way I figure it, if they don't have a conversation with me for an entire month that goes beyond "hello" or "good night" then they probably don't care that much if they don't find out right away.

  • I just randomly talk about it if it happens to come up. It's surprising actually how many people glaze over casual references and either say nothing or don't get it at all. I'm good with being 8 months pregnant and making people guess - no announcements for me (but this also goes for general acquaintances/not close friends).

  • I might tell people at tomorrow's Holiday party if they are questioning why I'm not drinking. If that doesn't come up.. I've started parking in the expectant mothers parking spot so I'm sure eventually people will notice.

  • My coworkers all put up Christmas cards in a common area so I just put our Christmas card announcement up there so people could see it. Do you do anything like that at your office?

I should have thought of this.

I would do that if I thought it would work. My job breaks down so that some of the people I work with never really interact.

Maybe I should just get a coffee cup that says it and drink tea all day.

  • I just told everyone that I wouldn't be working the summer with them. When they asked why I told them I would be on maternity leave.
  • I work at a group home for children with behavioral problems so I had to tell sooner than I wanted. I also had to inform my coworkers as I am unable to engage in any kind of physical management. I have worked there for 7 years and super close to most of my colleges so I didn't mind telling everyone. Everyone was super positive about. Good luck.
