I know UO was yesterday, but I need to vent...

I'm getting so frustrated with some of the stuff I am seeing on Facebook and the news over the past week, and I need to vent.  I really should have posted this on FB, but I don't want to get everyone's panties all in a twist.  I figured I would post here instead because if I get people annoyed, at least I don't know you ladies in real life! :)

First off, I should preface by saying that I am a Christian, so I am in no way saying this about all people of my religion, but just about intolerant people in general. I am so sick and tired of people on Facebook and on news websites acting like our religion is the only one that exists.  Hello, there are so many other religions out there: Judaism, Buddism, Islam, etc.  And one of the ideals our country was founded on was freedom of religion.  I believe very strongly in this right. However, some people act like freedom of religion applies only to them and not to people of other religions. Recently, a town in a neighboring state posted a banner on city property with a very Christian message, beyond just the typical "Merry Christmas" you might see in many towns.  Some people who weren't Christians were upset and protested, and in turn a lot of people who liked the banner are upset too.  As a result, I am seeing all kinds of things on my Facebook like this:

I'm sorry, but this is kind of ridiculous in my opinion.  No child would ever get in trouble for saying Christmas at school.  Heck, schools are even allowed to let student-run religious groups meet as long as the schools or teachers are not endorsing the religion. Pictures like this are blowing things way out of proportion.

I just wish people would see the other side of an issue sometimes instead of thinking their way is the only right way.  Even though I am a Christian, I can see how the aforementioned banner could be offensive to people of other religions, and I don't see what would be the problem with moving it to church property down the street.  It would be seen by just as many people and would no longer be on city property. 

Okay, I am stepping down off my soapbox now.  Feel free to flame me if I sound too preachy.

    I don't remember the exact wording from the article I read about it, but it was something along the lines of "Don't take Christ out of Christmas." As a Christian, I think it's a good sentiment, but I don't see why it can't be posted on church property instead of over public property. To me, the fact that the town is letting a religious message be pushed on town property is sending a message to people from other religions that their beliefs are not as important as mine. (The town does not do displays for Hanukkah and the like.)
    Yeah, I totally agree with you.  I don't go to church or practice whatsoever, but I would most likely be of some type of Christian faith and the fact that this is on city property would piss me off on behalf of other religions.  We need more religious people like you, who are accepting and tolerant of other religions and faith and are sensitive to their feelings.  Not many people like that exist and I applaud you for that.

    @Ciahanna I just read that article and thought the same thing! There are plenty of secular Christmas songs out there like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", "Rudolp the Red Nose Reindeer", "Frosty the Snowman", ect....

    I think some of it may be from that too, now that I think about it. But a lot of it is stemming from the local battle too.

I don't know why they didn't just pick a different song that was more along a secular tone. 

    Wow, back when I was in a high school choir, we just sang some songs related to other faiths and cultures too. I know for a fact we did a Hannukah song, and I think sometimes we did a Kwanzaa song too. I would have no problem with them just changing to secular songs, though; there are a lot of good ones. Changing the words just seems stupid.

    Yes. I can't tell you how many times I've heard stupid comments like, "Kids can't bring Bibles to school," from people who have no idea what they are talking about. Why, classes are even allowed to examine the Bible, Quran, Mahabharata, and other religious texts as long as they are looked at solely from a literary/historical standpoint and not being taught as a religion to follow.

    I think this is a case where a vocal minority is getting media attention (thank you, Fox News), and the reasonable majority isn't speaking up and/or isn't being heard.

    I totally agree with you. The city I live in recently changed the "Merry Christmas" signs on buses to "Happy Holidays," and there was an uproar. But what message are we sending as a CITY if Christmas is the only thing we publicly celebrate? There have been no "Happy Diwali" or "Happy Hanukkah" bus banners.

    I so completely agree with you, this makes me insane. If I see one more share on facebook of the 'Like this is you're going to say Merry Christmas this season instead of the politically correct Happy Holidays' my brain will explode. Hey, selfish ass, Christmas isn't the only holiday this season! I can be Christian and aware of my audience all at the same time, imagine that!
