Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Lazy Eye??

Hi moms out there!  My baby will be 2 months old tomorrow.  We have noticed that her left eye is becoming lazy, especially when she gets tired.  Sometimes she won't even open it.  She does go for her check up this week and of course I will bring it up, but I was just wondering if any of you have experienced this.

Re: Lazy Eye??

  • Most babies have an eye that is a little lazy, ours has it too, especially when she's tired. But she never has it where the eye just won't open. I would just bring it you to your pedi but I would think it will correct itself unless it's getting worse.

  • Around 1 my DD1 developed a lazy eye (so much older than your LO) and the pedi said it was fine. We weren't so pleased with that diagnosis and took her to a pedi eye dr and she did in fact have eye issues. We had to do eye patching to strengthen the muscles and at 18 months she had eye surgery where they adjusted the muscles in her eye. She is now 8 and has much better control over her eye muscles even when she's tired. She does wear glasses and has since the surgery. My DH cousin has a son who had the same issue and they noticed his around 5 months or so. It could most likely be nothing but as you said definitely have the dr take a look.

  • I'm an optometrist. An eye that stays closed is NOT a lazy eye. Lazy eye/amblyopia is a horribly common reason for visual impairment. It's serious. You don't just grow out of it. It is caused by either an eye turning or one eye having a much higher Rx than the other. The bad eye doesn't form the connections to the brain it needs. If left undiagnosed during childhood, that eye will essentially be blind. The younger your child is when diagnosed, the better the outcome. Find an optometrist that participates in InfantSee. They will see your child for free in the first year.
