Success after IF

Anyone's newborn get sick?

So my older two just came down with some NASTY colds.  High fevers, terrible coughs, etc.  I have been bleaching, washing and trying to keep them away from the baby but it's pretty much impossible to stop them from hacking on everything.  Now my throat is feeling scratchy and the baby has started sneezing like crazy.  I'm flipping out.  I have never dealt with a baby so small getting sick and I'm petrified!

I am exclusively breastfeeding so I'm praying on all things holy that that helps.

Re: Anyone's newborn get sick?

  • E didn't get sick that early. Her first real sickness was bronchitis at 4 months. Hopefully your efforts plus your BM will help. If LO does start acting sick, sleep on an incline, use a humidifier, and booger suck like crazy. For a fever I'd call the pediatrician. GL, and hopefully LO stays well. And I hope you feel better soon.

  • I have no experience but I do know that BFing will help so keep that up. Your BM has antibodies against the cold if you have it. To me, it is also worth a call to the pedi just to check in about what to watch for. Hope LO stays well!!!

  • Despite my preventative measures, the twins (and DH and I) got nasty colds courtesy of DS1 when they were still newborns (although not as young as your son). They were sleeping in their RNPs then, so the incline helped. I used saline drops and suctioned their little noses frequently. Their pedi ok'd Vick's Baby Vapo Rub on their feet, and I did that at night after a warm bath. It felt like they were sick FOREVER, but they got through it. Good luck!

  • Oh yes - the December 3rd kid.  DD#2 got a cold last year on December 26th.  She had a nasty stuffy/runny nose and nasty crusty eyes.  Thank goodness she never got a fever, but I checked her temp just about every diaper change!   Poor baby.  Then DS and DD#1 both got the stomach bug in January (vomit everywhere, me cleaning it up, giving the sick kiddos baths, baby screaming in the pnp because she wanted to be held or fed, DH out of town), then later DH and I both didn't feel well, but DD#2 never got it.  I am thinking BFing helped both times, but who knows?  I had red, raw, cracked hands from all the hand washing and hand sanitizing I did.  We also had a rule - no one touches the baby without washing hands or using special soap.  Good luck!  I hope the little guy manages to escape the illness.  Just watch out for fever or trouble breathing - those would buy you a trip to the ER :(  Thinking of you!

I have been obsessive compulsively checking his temp too!  And washing my hands, blankets and pillows the other kids touch, it's 3:00am and I just got done bleaching the kitchen table, high chair and booster seat, door knobs, etc instead of sleeping when the baby is sleeping and have even considered just spraying Lysol everywhere.  It's getting to the point where my husband thinks I need help ... I probably do ;)  I'm freakkkking out.
