I usually have $20-$60 in my wallet, and then probably another $200 or so tucked away in the house. For birthdays and Christmas we get a lot of cash gifts from relatives, so we always just keep that on hand instead of depositing it since we buy so regularly off our local buy & sell.
I keep a 20 in my wallet. I should prob keep more in there but never even think to take cash out! DH deposits all his checks via our bank app & I use our cc for groceries to get the points then pay it off right away. So I never have the cash back option.
Nope. Once money is out of the bank I think of it as "gone" and am more likely to spend it. Plus years of living in the city scared me to carry cash. I figured living there I shouldn't carry anything I can't afford to lose should I drop my wallet, have my pocket picked, get mugged, etc.
I've never understood why the Dave Ramsey cash system is considered a good idea. You drop one envelope, lose your bag, get your pocket picked and you're sunk budget wise. I can't imagine carrying enough cash for a month's worth of groceries. God forbid it disappeared on me!

For us I felt it was so easy to blow money swiping a card. We got coffee on the go a lot, grabbed a random bottle of water at the gas station, random shit at target, etc etc. I never carry a whole months worth of expenses--I only take what I have budgeted for that week on me at any given time.

Gotcha. We're more likely to do that if we have cash. If I have to swipe my debit card I stop and think twice and consider my budget and checking account balance, but cash might as well be monopoly money to me. Cash makes me nervous because if you have a break in or a fire and it's lost it's much harder to prove and get back than a debit card.
I usually have some cash in my wallet (varies from $5 to like $30) but I rarely pay w/ cash....it's for a just-in-case scenario. If DH ever has extra cash he gives it to me b/c he will spend it on random stuff and I will just hoard it, heheh.

I am the same way. Cash is gone in a heartbeat but if I have to swipe my card, well then the purchase may not be worth it.

See having to mentally calculate where our checking account balance on that day based on when dh got paid/when bills hit every time I wanted to splurge on little things would be maddening. I like knowing I have $x a week to spend whatever way I want without worry. We never think about account balances more than once a month--we only keep enough in checking for a single months worth of bills plus $1500 extra for emergencies. The rest of our money is in investments. Dh spends all of ten minutes making sure all the essential bills got paid in the right increments that are set through auto bill pay, we talk about anything we might need for the house/kids thats above and beyond what we have in extra cash for the month, transfer whats leftover to our investment account, and that's it.
Also if my house burns down I think trying to prove to the insurance company I had $200 in cash there is the least of my worries.
If I have it I do usually spend it on stuff I don't need (a coffee out, etc) but I am less likely to w/ a credit card.
We put ever on credit cards & pay off each month, so I don't have to think about the checking account anyway - but since we pay it off every month it is there. And while it may seem silly to some, we get major rewards w/ certain cards that literally pay for part of our vacations - flights, hotel nights, etc. I would hate to give that up.
We do the same thing. And literally never pay for plane tickets.

As tight as our budget is it's not hard to calculate. We have no room for "fat" in our budget right now, so it's easy. The average week means spending at the grocery store (2 stores, 1 time each) and gas as needed. And if our house burned down the loss of $200 would actually be a problem for us. Six more months until DH starts a non-student job (god willing) and that changes .
Always. I have at least $20 in my wallet at all times and have about $100 hidden in the house. It just seemed like occasions would pop up where I needed cash for something and didn't have it, so it comes in handy.
H never carries cash and he lost his debit card, so he charges everything and it drives me nuts. I offer to give him whatever cash he needs, but he is the type that if he has it, he will spend it on stupid stuff
Always. Usually it's for tipping, and we always take cash out before we go to dinner with a big group of people (usually once a month or so) so that we can throw in cash rather than makes the poor waiter split the bill 6 ways.
