Who else is going to cloth diaper?

I know there's a CD board, but I'd rather chat with you guys :)  Mostly, I'm just excited about getting things together. We took a CD class on Sunday, and ended up buying $275 worth of diapers and supplies!  Oops!

We're mostly going to try pre-folds with covers, but we got a couple pocket ones to try as well. Our favorite brand was Rumper Rooz, and we got about 6 or 7 of the covers to go with the pre-folds. There is a great local store in Chicago that did the class, and we will buy a lot there. I did add some stuff to our Amazon registry, too. I've heard most people don't like buying CD gifts unless it's something they do in their own home, but I figured I'd try to get other people on board. Now I'll try to resist more diapers until the baby is here, so we can see what we like and what works best for us. I can't wait to actually use them with the baby. Who would have thought I could get so excited about diapers?!  Hahahaha

Who else is doing CD? Or already has experience? Any thoughts or suggestions you have?

Re: Who else is going to cloth diaper?

  • We CD with our first and will with this one. My best advice is to try and hold off until the baby is here to buy more. You will know then what you really like (I did not like prefolds but love Flip and then pockets) and what fits your baby best (some are better for slim babies, others for chunkier babies). Also how many you really need. Over time, we went overboard and have WAY more than we really need. But it is hard to resist!

  • I am- just went through what all I have currently to remove tags and see what else I need to get :)
  • @babycaps, we did the class at Be By Baby, at Lincoln and Roscoe in Lakeview. It was great! They really focus on cloth diapering and breastfeeding, two things that are important to me. They have breastfeeding meet ups with a lactation consultant every couple weeks, too, which might be nice once baby is here.

Also, that Spray Shield looks really helpful! I wondered about splash issues with spraying the diaper into the toilet. Looks like it's adding to the registry :)
  • What @smchik said! Or if you really want to buy now I'd buy used and then if it doesn't work you're more than likely not out any money. We loved prefolds, fitteds, pockets and hybrids but not all brands work the same. So we liked BG pockets but hated fuzxibunz. Then BGs got too small and we had to buy a whole new stash of Alva/Sunbaby.

  • We are going to CD... First time parents so no advice ;) but we found a local workshop/network that helped us make the decision.
  • I am still cloth diapering Micah, and will continue on with 2.0.  :)  I have a pretty good collection that I will now get to use twice!!   I also made my own wipes and just use them with water--saves a ton of $ plus his butt loves it.
Me and my Kiwi, both 38.  We struggled with RPL and were blessed with Micah.  I'm a full custody stepmom to Ethan!

  • We plan to CD. I've ordered about 6 pockets and 4 covers so far from cottonbabies seconds sales. My mom thinks I'm crazy for wanting to CD but my friends and MIL are pretty supportive of it. My friends who CD only use BG 4.0 and love them. I also registered from some in hopes that maybe one of my CD friends will get us some, but if they don't that is ok I'll just stock up from online. It's hard not to spend more.

    I am on the fence.
For those who have experience, do you use Flushable liners? Are they helpful? I've also seen a spray toilet attachment to basically hose the poop off into the toilet. Anyone have experience with one of those? And this may be a stupid question, but where does the poop go if you don't have one of those spray things?
  • We CD with DS and plan to with the twins. My NB stash has over 4 dozen dipes!! We have BG AIO, Lil Joey, Kissaluv and thirstie covers.

If we have a girl(s) I need to get A LOT more girly dipes.

We did with DD so still have all the stuff...we didn't take them out at all for DS but may CD at least part time with this one.  I just never liked going out with them - it added way too much bulk to my diaper bag, I like to travel light :)

I tried pocket diapers (BG's 3.0) but never really liked them...I much preferred prefolds with Thirsties covers.

  • We love our cloth diapers! Prefolds are great and super easy once you figure out the folds that work best for you and your LO. I'm looking forward to getting our PFs out again for this baby. We mostly use BG 4.0s because they're so user friendly. Seriously, CDs are so easy. Daycare has been great using them and it hasn't been hard to keep up with laundry even with us both working FT. Though we are starting PTing next week for DD so hopefully I'll have a short break from diaper laundry for a while :). A diaper sprayer for when LO starts solids is definitely a must!

Poop before solids doesn't need to be sprayed off, just throw the whole diaper in your pail or wet bag. I never bought a sprayer and I really didn't like the flushable liners. We just used a plastic spoon to scrape off the poop.

When DS was a newborn we did a mix of prefolds and covers with some newborn sized pockets and all in ones. Once he could fit in the one size diapers we did mostly bum genius and blueberry pockets with some all in ones.

I just bought 10 used newborn simplex for this little one. I may add a few more one sized pockets in girly prints because I can't resist the fluff. Other than that, my stash is all set :)

    That's what we're doing!

I think we'll stop after the first few weeks and switch to our own prefolds or (gasp) flats!

We will be CD, but I haven't purchased anything yet. Do any of you have experience with Best Bottoms (AI2)? They sound really great, cause I could use them as a cover with prefolds, and I could Also use the inserts, which snap in instead of being stuffed into pockets (like Bum Genius).

I just don't know how much to buy right away. I hate to spend $400 on a brand just to have it not work -- because really, each baby is different. But I'd love to just get it out of the way and buy everything I need!

  • @pattipants Best Bottoms are our diaper bag diapers. They are trim, and I like them, but the covers run small and fit differently than other CDs (kind of like a low rise) - they DO still fit my 30 lb 2 year old though (as do rumparooz which people usually say run small/are outgrown quickly, but there is a video about how to put those on correctly to make them last size-wise). We use the inserts that he's outgrown for Best Bottoms as doublers to increase absorbancy in pockets as needed.

@TallAsh good points. I'm still considering it but don't know anyone irl who CDs. I deal with newborn poop all the time during my newborn sessions as they are diaper free, and its not that big a deal, even the explosive gross poops. i guess I'm more apprehensive about the poops in cds after solids are introduced. And also about using CDs while out of my home. Maybe using both might be an option for me.

We are! I have prefolds and covers(2 wool), AIO, pockets( inserts are hemp, bamboo, and microfiber), and a couple AI2.

LO will be our first experience but I've been slowly building my stash since we started TTC. I've bought nothing but sale items and second hand. I haven't bought much of the same brands.

I have grovia, bumGenius, blueberry, flips, imagine, alvas, nick is diapers, kawaii, GMD workhorses, and some oh Katy

  • We are! I am lucky to have a local cloth diaper group and have bought some sash online and some during Black Friday. I have picked up some AIOs, pockets and a few prefolds/covers. I plan to get some more prefolds and covers and also do a few weeks of diaper service. Can't wait!

  • We will be cloth diaper our daughter. We did it with DS and it has been great. Not and issue at all in my opinion they are pretty easy. We did streamline and only have one brand. (BumGenius 4.0 Pocket Diapers OS) I did purchase some girly colors though since I have mostly boyish or gender neutral and I wanted some girly colors. We also want to pick up some new wet bags, since DH threw them in with our bleach cycle and they look kind of rough.

  • I'm going to look into cloth diaper groups… that's a great idea! I love living in a big city, because it guarantees there's a group for everything :)
  • That's great that you took a class! I'm sure it was very helpful. It makes a lot more sense now, doesn't it? I've been CDing my twins for 2.5 years. They are potty trained now but obviously baby #3 will be CD'ed as well :)

I'd also get some fitteds and AIO's to try as well! Prefolds are definitely the most economic choice, but IMO they are a little more annoying to use, haha. AIO's are perfect for dads and grandparents! :)

  • I really really want to! I still have to completely convince H, he is a bit skeeved out at the thought of poo in the washing machine (get used to being a dad, buddy,....) and I'm not sure if this will be a complicating factor, but we are hoping to put our house on the market as soon as stuff starts to settle down a tiny bit once this baby is born. Maybe I'm being naively optimistic, but hopefully 4-6 weeks afterwards? (No, it wasn't perfect timing, but it is what it is!) then if all goes reasonably well, we might be able to be in a new house 4ish months after the baby is here? So I'm just wondering now if CD is one too many things on my plate... Having never bought a house, sold a house, had a baby, or basically even changed one (!) I just have no idea what it will all be like. At least if I hold off CDing for a few months, then I can just buy one size diapers, and skip the newborn sizes, right? Feel free to talk me up (or down!)

  • @kalpa521 - I never used a diaper sprayer or liners. I just never got around to getting a sprayer and I thought liners were a PITA (they always got all wrinkled in the diaper and poop still got on the diaper). If it doesn't plop, just use a wad of TP to get off what you can. I've been doing that method for 2.5 years now and it works for me!

If it's not in your budget to have a newborn stash NBD. we were going to skip that all together and use disposable but since we planned so far in advance we didn't much of a difference in our monthly spending. Having all of that going on you might be better off with a OS stash, or sized if you prefer that. And even at that you could CD part time if it's all seeming overwhelming with the buying/selling/ moving.

    Good luck! ;)

  • Me!

I'm registering for BG 4.0 but I won't prep them all if baby needs a different kind. I'm considering prefolds for when he's a newborn but I might just use disposable diapers until the BGs fit. I love the idea of using them for a second child.
  • I am thinking about cloth diapering ... and am completely new to ANY kind of diapering but am getting lots of negative feedback when I mention the idea of considering cloth diapering.  We also visited a daycare yesterday and think we will use that daycare for when I have to go back to work.  We did ask about cloth diapers... and they will change them if the baby comes in with a cloth diaper but they insist on changing the baby into a disposable diaper.  So, I still need to do my research but maybe if we CD at home and the baby is only in disposables with the daycare then it will work out ok.  Also, I'm just convinced that if this baby's skin is even HALF as sensitive as my husband's that the cloth diapers will make a big difference.
  • We CD DD and will for #2 as well. I don't know how people handle solids without a sprayer and Spray Pal. Almost all of her poop is plopable, but I still feel the need to spray off all residue because I don't want them to stain. I find liners to be a huge PITA, but I use fleece ones if I need to use a diaper cream that isn't CD safe.

@lalaith50, what convinced my DH was talking to a guy friend who has a kid already and is using cloth diapers. He was pretty skeptical before we got pregnant, but now he's totally into it. It sounded adorable to me-- two dudes discussing the merits of cloth diapers over a couple beers at our neighborhood bar!

Also, it might be a little tough to deal with cloth diapers while your house is on the market, because they do recommend you air dry most of the cover to help the elastic last. You could wait a few months, but I would personally be worried that by then I'd be in my routine, and just cave in to using disposables.
  • We are. I have most of our stash already- just need to build up our newborn stash more.

Friends and family seem apprehensive, but as soon as I show them some pocket diapers they don't look at me so crazy.

  • Im so happy my parents and our other primary caregiver (my cousin) are into the cloth diapering too.  When I told my mom we were doing this she said "Well you and your brother were cloth diaper babies so I'd expect nothing less!"  It's nice to have their support, since everyone else we come in contact with are giant naysayers ('We will see how long that lasts, etc.) ANNOYING!

FTM, so Im building our stash, but so far I have:

5 Real nappies Infant covers (which I hope I like - they were only $30), 1 Rumparooz Infant cover, 1 Prowrap Classic Infant Cover, 4 Lotus bumz Pocket Diapers with 8 inserts (zulilly sale!)

We have some flats, but only because they were too cheap to resist. Going to try mostly prefolds.  Hoping that some people do buy the diapers on our registry, but knowing that they all think we are crazy I am not counting on it.  I think I want to get a bunch of flips, @Bjordanemery (and any other flips users)  do you like them?
