UPDATE: on switching OBs and will definitely be a January mom

Backstory:  I've been having complications and my OBs office has not been managing it well IMO.  Wanted to switch OBs but wasn't sure who would take me at this point.

I called around last Friday and couldn't find anyone on my insurance who was willing to take me and who didn't have horrible reviews of the practice.  I was pretty bummed but then got a call from my OBs office on Monday that my labs were back and they were referring me to an MFM.  Met with her on Thursday and she was WONDERFUL.  She had me do one more round of bloodwork.  If the labs come back as improving, we will induce on January 19th (38 weeks).  If they come back not as good, we will induce on January 12th (37 weeks).  I will not schedule another appointment with the OB that seemed to have no clue about the cholestasis symptoms and who ignored me when I was talking about decreased movement.  I had an OB appt too yesterday and felt very comfortable with him and he listened to all my questions.  I'm feeling much better and am grateful to have a plan.  Thanks for all your advice ladies!

  • Glad to hear it all worked out - sounds like you've got a good team in place now! :)

  • Glad that you feel more comfortable, just hope that they do what they need to to make sure that your LO is ready to come and going to be ok. I'd hate to see your LO stuck in the nicu for being induced early, but I suppose you have outweighed the risks to carry longer or delivery early. GL
  • So happy you are with someone who listens to you!!!!
  • Yay! I'm so glad you met with someone who understands!

  • Glad you found someone you are comfortable with. One of my friends had cholestasis with all three of her pregnancies--you definitely want someone keeping an eye on it. She was induced between 36-37 weeks with all three, and they are all healthy and happy kiddos now. GL!
  • Great! Finding the right dr is like finding your soul mate to me :-) So glad you are getting good care.
  • What a relief!!! Now, lay back and enjoy these last few weeks!

Absolutely.  Unfortunately the risks with cholestasis rise considerably at 37 weeks so the standard of care is induction at 36-38 weeks.  I hope he doesn't end up in the NICU but the risk of stillbirth is higher priority at that point.
  • Yeah! That is great news. Having a provider you trust makes a huuuuuge difference.

  • @quidditchcapn1120 I know everyone is different but my sister was induced at the end of 37 weeks and her little girl was fine! lots of T&P's being sent your way but I'm glad to hear you like your MFM!! are you very itchy still or are you on the steroids?

  • @Rach521 I'm itchy but the meds are making it tolerable. I was scratching till I bled before the meds. I'm not on steroids though, just Actigall. I'm hoping for another good outcome like I had with my first son- it's stressful dealing with this 2 pregnancies in a row!
  • Glad you found someone who understands your condition! And as for the early induction, you're doing what's best for you and your baby, and that's all that matters! Hopefully the next few weeks are tolerable!

  • Ugh! It sound like you and LO have been through so much!! I'm sorry that your OB wasn't listening to you, or competent in this situation. : / But so very happy for you that things are starting to look up, you've found helpful providers & now have a safe plan for you & LO!! :)
  • I'm so glad you have found someone better who can actually help you! :)

In the last week or so I've been waking up at night super itchy, and super itchy during the day. It's definitely on my hands and feet and basically everywhere in between. Last night I was up literally every hour itching. I think I'm going to call my doctor on Monday morning because I'm definitely nervous that I have cholestasis. I had to go off the birth control pill two years ago because my liver enzymes were high, so I feel like it's not that much of a stretch. I really hope they can help me with the itching because it's so terrible!

Major props to you for surviving it 2 pregnancies! I hope you have some relief now!

Please do talk to your doctor about this!  It takes so long for the bile acids test to come back (around 10 days) so if you are going to need intervention, it is best to be diagnosed as soon as possible.  FX that it isn't cholestasis though!  Also, if your doctor doesn't seem to know or understand the condition, please get a second opinion!

I decided to just call today- and the first thing the midwife brought up was cholestasis, so they are definitely familiar with it. They are going to both tests on me tomorrow. I am supposed to go away (3 hour plane ride) on Thursday which they were fine with before, so I'm hoping both for a negative diagnosis and that they let me still go. It sounds silly but I just NEED something good at the moment- I really dislike pregnancy!
