Vent: Im too sick to go to the NICU :(

Short version: I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia today by my primary care dr.

I"ve been feeling pretty rotten for a few days but had chalked it up to sleep deprivation, stress, etc.
I haven't seen my little guy since Sunday because of sitter coordination issues for  my older kids, so it was a blessing in a way since I wasn't sick the last time I saw him.

Now I can't see him until this Sunday because I can't take a zpack due to pumping, so I'm on Ceftin which will take a lot longer to knock it out.
I know it's best for him, but goodness, I'm heartbroken. The nurses and lactaction counselors are being very supportive but this really sucks....  :,(

  • I'm so sorry you can't see him! But at least you'll be 100% and feeling better the next time you do! Hang in there momma!

  • Sorry that you can't see your little one. I just had strep throat and didnt see my son for 3 days and was super upset. At least you won't be contagious and that's the most important thing that matters.
  • I'm so sorry :( But he's in good hands.

  • I'm sorry! I had that happen once where I couldn't go for 9 days.  My nurses were awesome and sent me pics, videos, and did facetime.  My husband also went and snuggled with her.  She is in good hands.  Try to concentrate on getting better!! :)

  • thanks, Ladies, for the support!
I've been feeling a lot better today and trying to focus on spending a few minutes at a time on disinfecting the house, and feathering the nest, so to speak.
My DH was able to go late last night and visit. He left a disposable camera for the nurses and they loved it.  Little guy gets his picc line removed today since he is really gaining weight and tolerating increased feeds very well:) :):)  Still trying to get him where he's comfortable on his oxygen levels.. He's back up to 38% and 4 liters.

Side note: What's wrong with Zpak while pumping? It should be fine to use.

I don't know specifics, but the nurse practitioner at the dr office and the lactation nurse said it was not recommended.

  • Sorry you are sick! How heartbreaking. I'm glad your LO is doing well and you can get a few things done around the house. I'm sure it will help your sanity later, though I won't go so far as to say it's a blessing in disguise, ha!

    Hi there,

Have you asked the neo's about it? I was put on a strong antibiotic that my OB told me to pump and dump with, and when I told the NICU nurses how dissapointed I was with that, they brought it to their daily round-table discussions with the neo's and they all agreed it was OK to pump and give to the baby. It doesn't hurt to ask!

  • I'm so sorry you are so sick and unable to see your LO. I'll keep you in my thoughts & prayers. It's what's best for baby, but having limitations to visiting was a terrible feeling when we were in the NICU. Try to rest & feel better soon!
  • thanks again, everyone!

I had my big emotional break down last night. I just couldn't take it. DH had bought a newer car yesterday since his old one is on its last leg and his new job is a further commute. I rode with him to pick it up last night and there was a couple walking in carrying a baby in a carrier and, thankfully I was waiting in my van in the parking lot, before I knew it I had one tear and then a waterfall, ugly cry.

This has been the longest week of my life.

I even wanted to throw my pump out in the street last night.. I'd just had enough of the "fakeness" of being a new mom=ie not getting to see my LO, being plugged to a machine while having very sore boobs and expected to make milk on demand, and just feeling like poop from giving birth less than 2 weeks ago and trying to get over this yuck..

I am clear to go tomorrow and I plan on getting there as soon as I can. I'm sure y'all understand what that's like..

Thanks again for your support for this newbie.
