Congestion :(

Anyone else dealing with this? Any tips?

Last night, L woke up around 3:30am coughing and appearing to struggle to breathe. I picked her out of the rock n play, (holding her up helped her breathe), pat her back, and used the bulb suction thing to get out a lot of mucous. I called the 24-hour pediatrician line, and they said as long as she didn't have a fever, then it wasn't an emergency.

Yesterday, I took her to the pediatrician, and they listened to her breathe and said everything sounded clear. I asked about her coughing spell, and he said to get a humidifier and keep her elevated (she already sleeps in the rock n play).

Well, tonight at 5am, she started coughing again :(. Same as last night, congested sounding, lots of mucous (not spit up). I did the same as last night (without the freaking out and calling the ped).

I just feel so bad, I want my baby to be able to breathe! (After suctioning and feeding, she's breathing normally now)

Re: Congestion :(

  • We have night time congestion too...

  • I second the shower steam.  I sit him in the bouncy seat while I shower or just run the hot shower for the steam.  I also love the nose freida.  It has helped a ton.
  • I recently got a Nose Frida for LO and love it. For us, it seems to work better than the nose bulb when removing mucous.
  • We've been dealing with some congestion for the past few days also. We're doing the  rock and play at night, humidifier, saline drops and the nose Frida. The nose Frida works SO much better than the bulb syringe. I use a few saline drops before and after to loosen the mucus and make sure his noise stays hydrated.

  • Absolutely second the nose frida! It is a lifesaver. I would strongly suggest getting one. It is so simple it doesn't even wake DS up when I do it in the wee morning hours.

  • We had the same issue- we have started a humidifier, taking her into the bathroom for the steam, nose Frieda, and saline drops.

Only note of caution: do one nostril, let baby recover and then do the other. The pedi nurse told me that if you do both at the same time they will feel like they are drowning.
  • We do saline drops. Because of her reflux LO is very congested at night.
