Working Moms

An intro and question (long)

Hi ladies! I've been lurking on this board as I have been trying to prepare myself for returning to work. I start back on Monday - my daughter will be 12 weeks that day. This seems like a really supportive group and I've already found the advice so helpful.

I would love some advice - my mom will be watching my DD. She was sleeping through the night but that came to an end a few days ago. I've been trying to put her on a schedule these last couple of weeks with some flexibility but I've noticed that when my mom has babysat during the day shell give her an ounce of FF here and there to help her sleep. She then puts her down once she's asleep.

I'm so thankful for the fact that my mom is taking this on - I dont want to make things harder for her by forcing a certain schedule. I plan to have a consistent morning, evening and bedtime routine/schedule but should I push my mom to stick to one when she's there? Told my mom if give her a schedule as a guide but I know she'll cave at nap time.

Thanks - looking forward to getting to know everyone !

Re: An intro and question (long)

  • Hi! I find that having a schedule and a routine is critical to my sanity as a working mom. My mom respects my direction. My MIL not so much and has made snide comments about how rigid I can be. I make it clear that she is not to alter it as it is part of the reason DS is so good in my opinion. I have told DH that if she chooses not to follow our direction then she will not watch DS. I rarely use her to watch him, he is in daycare, but she often asks to watch him. I avoid it like the plague for this and several other reasons. Good luck back at work!

  • I'd insist that she would at least try to keep a routine. But then again, I would never have my mom or MIL as childcare. I know we would butt heads.
  • I think its good to give a guide but just know that everyone cares for children differently so a strict schedule is probably not feasible. Instead of a schedule, I think you can ask that she follow sleepy cues or certain guidelines for putting LO to sleep --- dont rock to sleep or give a bottle in the glider with the lights out etc. DS is in day care part time and with my SIL in law part time and we have no issues on the weekends with naps or bed time.
