PUPPS support group

Not one to post, mostly a lurker ... But now that I'm suffering from PUPPS I need encouragement. I've been showering w/pine tar soap for 2 days taking 2 showers a day and slathering on some prescription cream Dr. gave me.
How is everyonesuffering from this doing? Any other home remedies to help treat this??
I'm 2 wks pp. can't imagine going through this while pregnant.

Re: PUPPS support group

  • I'm finally not itching from mine. It started last Saturday and it spread...FAST. I made it thru the weekend taking benadryl once a day and went and saw my OB first thing Monday morning. She diagnosed it as PUPPS and gave me a topical steroid cream as well as an oral steroid to get it as fast as possible. I started the oral steroid on Tuesday and finally stopped itching yesterday. It still looks awful but at least my skin doesn't feel like it's on fire any more.

I had it at 37 weeks with my first and it was awful while pregnant because topical steroids is about all you can do. Since I'm 2 weeks PP this time I was able to do the oral steroids which seriously saved my sanity

  • The lotion I got from the doc did NOTHING... Literally Sarna and Aveno concentrated anti itch were the only things that helped me. I had it everywhere from my abdomen down... even my butt!!
  • I think I am suffering from PUPPS now.   I started getting very itchy last weekend, and when I was at my Monday appointment my doctor said that stretch marks are dry and to use cocoa butter lotion and I would be fine.  Well, by the next morning, I had some itchiness on my hips.  It has since gone from my hips to my thighs and I have a few bumps on my ankles.  I have used shea butter, cocoa butter, various Aveeno products, benadryl lotion, hydrocortizone cream, and even baking soda in the shower.  I found a website:

      https://www.naomikritzer.com/motherhood/PUPPP.shtml

so this afternoon I am going to try to find the Grandpa's Tar Soap and also that Band Aid Anti Itch Gel (had it a few years ago for bug bites and it was the only thing that gave me any relief).  I ice a few times a day and even get up in the middle of the night and end up sleeping on the couch because I need to ice and don't want to keep my husband awake. Last night I tried taking some benadryl and I was able to stay in bed the whole night, getting up a few times to reapply some lotion; but the itch wasn't has bad as it has been the past few nights.

So far I have had a great pregnancy, and I am at 40 weeks right now.   I am looking forward to the pain of labor just to end the discomfort of the itch.  My entire pregnancy I promised myself I wouldn't use medicine or even drugs during the labor.  At this point I am so frustrated and irritated with the itch I might have to reconsider my plans, because the itch is so unbearable.  I think I can tolerate pain better than irritation.

  • Sarna Anti Itch was the best thing for me.  I got it in my last week or so of pregnancy.  I'm now 9 days PP and still have it, but it doesn't seem to be *as* bad.  Still bad...but bearable.  Being in labor with this *** killed me.  The belt that they had around my waist to monitor contractions was SO ITCHY!  It didn't stop being horrifying until i had the epidural in!

  • I've gotten to the point where I am as done as possible with this.  It has spread all over my body.  I have tried all the suggestions of others (Sarna, Aveeno oatmeal baths, Benadryl, etc.)  I have probably spent 80 bucks already on anti-itch products that don't help.  Cold showers and ice seem to be my only relief.  I haven't been outside for days, can't get more than 2-3 hours of sleep at a time, and can't even go to the bathroom without bringing out more itchiness (from pants rubbing as I pull them up & down).  I feel almost mentally broken.  I called my doc yesterday and she said to take Benadryl (had already been taking) or Claritin.  I am supposed to go in on Tuesday for a Non-Stress Test, but I am fearing it because of the monitors on my belly.  I'm even starting to fear the itchiness during labor and beyond.  I wanted a drug free labor and delivery for the past 9 months, but at this point anything to have my baby out and try to end this.  I was at my doctor on Monday and just my stretch marks were itchy, so my doc wasn't concerned.  I am sadly praying they will induce me even though it is completely not what I wanted:-(

    Sad

Honestly...the monitors on my belly at the hospital were brutal. It was sooooo itchy it was almost worse than the contractions.  Between the contractions, the tummy itching under the belts from the monitor and the blood pressure cuff cutting off circulation to my hand it was an almost unbearable combination of stimuli.  It's probably not what you want to hear, but the epidural saved me because I couldn't feel the itching anymore once it kicked in.

I didn't have PUPPS with my first, so when this rash appeared I was so less than trhrilled.  I am 11 days PP and it still itches but nowhere near as bad.  Although, it has since spread to my lower legs and tops of my feet.  I'm hoping it completely disappears soon.

Good luck with everything!  Hopefully all goes well and this goes away for you.

  • Thanks.  This is the strangest thing I have ever physically suffered from.  For months I was concerned with how I was going to be strong mentally and physically for a completely natural birth and this PUPPPs garbage has my mind elsewhere.  It started on my belly and has since gone to my hips, butt, all down my legs, and today it was higher on my belly, practically reaching my boobs, back, and also on my arms and hands.  Not too red on my upper body yet, but my lower body is a mess.

My husband is out search for the pine tar soap; hope he finds it.  I asked him to buy a big bag of ice so I can make small bags of ice, because once it itches in one place, it seems to itch everywhere.

It sucks that you are still suffering from it.  I have read that some women have it from around their 33rd week or so.  I could never imagine having this that long!  I'm glad your itch is starting to decrease.  My doctor said to stay out of the heat, so hopefully if you can it will continue to go down real soon.  The humidity certainly hasn't helped this summer.  Good luck and thanks so much for the heads up!

  • I am 33 weeks and 5 days. I was diagnosed with PUPPPS today. It started last week on the bottom of my breasts where my stretch marks were. I thought to myself that these stretch marks seems a little more itchy then they should be, but being that this is my first child I had no prior knowledge to go on. Then after 2 days it started to spread to my upper arms and my back, along my arm pitts. Soon it made its way to my hips and the lower part of my stomach, and now today some new locations are the front on my things, backs of my knees, and my bottom. A few random bumps have popped up under my breasts and the tops of my feet, but they have not gotten worse…..yet. I did my research before going to the doctors office & was hoping that they would tell me I was having an allergic reaction to something. He conformed it was PUPPPS, but I am somehow, through all the itching, still in denial. Even as I sit here at 3:08am writing this with an icepack shoved in-between my belly & my breast!!!
After I explained to my husband what the rash was & what I was in for I had a mental breakdown. Just knowing that this is only the beginning, that I still have 6 more weeks of this torture is almost unbearable to think about. Whose to say I don’t wake up tomorrow & my entire stomach is covered. I have been obsessed with doing research today, all over blogs and helpful hint websites. So much so that my husband coned me into getting out of the house and do a little baby shopping. I will say that when I was out of the house, the itching wasn’t as horrible - I had something else to think about other that how much a certain body part itches!!
I have been taking Benadryl which I do not like but was told by the doctor that it is ok, just do not exceed the recommended daily allowed. I do find that usually helps me sleep, except tonight as I took the pill at 7pm.
After my doctors appointment I went to GNC and purchased Grandpas Pine Tar Soap and Dandelion Root pills. I have used the soap once so far & notice a difference in the dryness of my skin. Not particularly the itchy parts, but all the other parts, my hands, feet, etc. But honestly, I would rather have the driest skin ever than deal with constant itching.
We don’t know the sex of our baby, but after doing my research - I can assume that there is an 80% chance that we are having a boy.
