when LO goes in a 2nd or other car...

when LO goes in a second car, or another family member's car, what do you do for a carseat?
do you have a 2nd carseat?  if so, which model?
or do you pass one around and un-install then re-install it?   if so, which model, and how easy is it to install?

LO is finally outgrowing her infant seat, and multiple family members pick her up from daycare on different days so we need to have carseat coverage in a few cars.  Trying to decide to get something to pass around like we currently do with the infant seat, or get 3 carseats in addition to the nice one we have in my car...

  • DH and I are the only ones that drive LO around. We just uninstall and move when needed. We have a Safety 1st. I don't remember the model name. It is rather easy and a lot more economical for as much as we need it out of my car.

  • We just bought a second Diono Radian RXT for FMIL's car. I had to pay the difference though since her insurance company only have her $100 for a new seat after she totaled her car with DS... FI's dad bought an Evenflo SureRide for him to use when he is in town (he lives 2 hours away and visits a lot). We keep that at our house and also use it as an alternate. It is so easy to install and uninstall!

  • We have two car seats one for each care but we are the only ones that pick up Z from daycare. My parents don't pick him up but if they decided to, we'd leave them the evenflo symphony 65DLX. It has the quick connect system which means all they have to do is put their weight on the seat and it tightens itself. Its not the easiest to get the right angle since some seats slope back but I would feel good knowing its installed tight and it doesn't have to be hand tightened since.. well they are old :) hehe :)

  • Right now, I have a car seat (Nextfit) in my car and my mom and DH still have the infant base in theirs. MIL already has a carseat in her car (Safety 1st). I do the majority of the driving and the others just make sure they have the infant seat if they're going to be driving.  For Christmas, we are getting two more car seats; one for DH and one for my mom.  Then, everyone who drives DD will have on in their car and I won't need to worry about uninstalling.

  • Currently DH and I are the only ones with a car seat.
MIL currently babysits one day a week. She has never had to take DS anywhere, or pick him up.
I was leaving the infant carrier with her when she had DS, but he has long since out grown it.
I'm sure she's irritated that she no longer has a seat 'just in case', but my feeling is that if he gets seriously hurt, she should call 911, not throw a fit because she doesn't have a car seat.

I wouldn't trust that either she or FIL would be able to install a convertible carseat rear facing properly in either of their cars in a hurry, so they would have to buy one and have it permanently installed, and I'm thinking they won't be babysitting much in the next few months, so why bother now?!?!
  • I agree with uconn....way too much room for error in the reinstalling process. Plus, my MIL wouldn't have the strength to clip the latch system latches.

We have 3 car seats. One in my car (Britax Marathon) and one in DH's car and one in MIL's car (both Britax Roundabouts). One Roundabout was a hand me down with a lot of years left on it and the other we got for $80 on sale. The Marathon was a shower gift. Not sure how expensive, but I think around $350.

  • I would suggest getting each car their own seat so that you don't have to worry about the installation, the Cosco scenera is a fairly cheap seat but does it's job, just without all the bells and whistles. You can get three of these seats for the price you would pay for one of another seat. https://www.amazon.com/Cosco-Scenera-Convertible-Seat-Quigley/dp/B0084VBPHO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1387556766&sr=8-4&keywords=cosco+scenera
  • Get each car it's own seat.  The Scenera is great.  For a little more you can get the Evenflo Sureride ($80) which will last you a little longer.

Similar for us. We have the Diono RXT for my car, where she rides 99% of the time, and the SureRide for other cars - currently with my parents, but soon with my husband (he's had the infant seat, but that's getting retired after Xmas).

  • I agree with PP. Get cheap seats for each car. Not worth it.
