Bottled water for formula.. question

I've tried googling this, but didn't find an answer specific to my question. When I make a bottle of formula I use bottled water. I pour the amount I want and put the cap back and keep it on the counter for the next feeding. I never take a sip out of it and I use the whole bottle in one day of feedings. My husband says that, even though no one put their mouth on it, it can still grow bacteria once it's been opened. Is using the bottled water throughout the day ok? Or should I just use tap water? (I drink it and never had a problem). Like I said, I googled this but everything I found was specific to drinking out of the bottle and then using the rest later on. Thanks!

  • I cannot offer any scientific back up, only my opinion FWIW, but I would be perfectly fine with doing what you are doing.  What about people with room temperature water coolers?  My brother's home had an issue with public water and for a couple years the water company supplied the large water bottles and a ceramic water dispenser that was not cold.  All their kids are still alive :)

  • No scientific evidence but this is what we do for LO and have had no problems. With my DD's we used a whole gallon of bottled water over a few days and there was no problem.

I can't imagine there would be enough (if any) bacteria growth to cause harm. But if he's still concerned you can ask your pedi their opinion.
  • If this were true, gallons of water would go to waste :)

  • I don't think that bottled water is an issue, however my pedi said to use tap as the fluoride in the water is helpful for future tooth development.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • My understanding is that as long as you aren't using well water it's fine to use regular old tap.  I nannied for many years and now do home daycare and have never used anything but tap.

As to your question about whether you can use the opened bottle I think it's fine, if it was a problem it would probably be all over the internet :)
  • I always use the water from my brita pitcher that I fill with tap water. My lo has no issues and I have been doing it for over 2 weeks.
  • It is safe to use tap water but we have well water -- that's why we use bottled. When my kids were 6 months they were started on fluoride to compensate for not having city water.

Well water is safe to use if you have had it tested. We haven't so we just never drink out of the tap.
  • I was originally going to use bottle because that's what we drink but the doctor told us to either use tap or nursery water because it has fluoride.
  • They sell nursery water by the gallon - no baby is drinking a gallon a day so I'd say you're good!
