Come at me..BIRTHMARK UPDATE.

edited December 2013 in August 2013 Moms
With your experience with strawberry birthmarks. My babe's is ulcerating and it's painful for her (her Ped said it shouldn't be). she has been a screaming mess when I touch it over her shirt, it's bleeding and thick scabbing. I'm putting aquaphor and breast milk and hydrocortisone and other things and it just looks like a big giant cracked sore. I feel horrible because I know it hurts her. We were referred to a dermatologist. Anyone with similar experiences?

Edited for grammar because I'm tired as Fuuuuck.

Update: gave her tylenol and she woke up 3 times to nurse in a 9 hour period last night. A lot better than the screaming all nighter she pulled the night before. I feel horrible like she was in so much pain? I'm also getting ready to walk in to the Peds office to show her the sore. If they don't do anything I'm taking her to urgent care or The White House. ;) I'll let you know.

But thank you so much ladies. I really appreciate your responses.

UPDATE: my pediatrician is a dumbass. She said the ONLY treatment was laser treatments for these kinds of birthmarks. Well, we had the ultrasound, they okayed us for treatments in San Francisco, we drive all the way out here and they gave us a topical and an oral med with a topical pain ointment instead. THANK GOD. After the initial sting of the topical pain ointment (I can't spell right now...shoot me) she melted in my arms and giggled for the first time in a few weeks. MH and I have ceased crying tears of relief now that she is out of pain and we are going to take a nice drive across the Golden Gate Bridge rather than jump off it. ;) thank you for your support ladies. It truly means a lot to me.

  • I'm not even sure what that is so I'm no help, but I hope she starts feeling better and gets some relief soon! Poor baby Bama :(

  • It's like that big raised red birthmark some babies get. Ugh.

  • Is that the same thing as a hemangioma? Sorry, I don't have any experience :( But that sounds awful that it's painful and scabby. I really hope it starts to heal soon. Good call on the BM though!

Yes that exactly what it is.

  • This may be a dumb question... Is it also referred to as a stork bite? If so, my son has 2, but they aren't raised. I'm so sorry. I hope she gets better soon!!! And that you get some sleep!!

Yes that exactly what it is.

Joel has a BIG one on the back of his head. It's not painful or bleeding though.... Have you asked the ped? Maybe there's some kind of irritation.
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • I hope you can get into the dermatologist quickly! In my adult experience they can take forever to get an appointment!

I don't have experience with strawberry birthmarks but my advice would be to use the least amount of product as possible- either just the aquaphor or BM on it a few times a day. You don't want it to dry out which can cause it to bleed, scab or be sore but overloading with products could actually cause it to dry out and become irritated.  Also, when you bathe her I would avoid scented soaps and soap directly on the birthmark as the soap can also contribute to drying it out and irritation.

And scratching (I am assuming that this is itchy when irritated)-it can be hard to tell if LO is scatching it but I would also make sure her nails are really short so that if she is scratching she isn't getting bacteria into the sore/causing more irritation. It might even be good to put gloves on her hands at night- which can suck if she is a tumb sucker.

On another note, I believe that these usually get bigger between 4-6 months and then start to get smaller until they finally disappear. Could it be that it's irritated because its growing?

I hope your LO gets some relief soon!

Thank you for your post. It's on her back so there's no scratching from her thank god. Im definitely not overloading it with product, I may be under loading it as I have only been putting something on it once or twice a day. I was alternating between products. I think that because it's dry and cracking the stinging is hurting her? It bleeds too, and bleeds through her shirt. This accelerated very quickly. The last few days she has been so fussy and not sleeping very well, so I figured it was just the sleep regression, but she has been crying and screaming out when I do anything that rubs up against her sore and causes her to not fall asleep. I'm just so sad and frustrated and I do also hope they can get us in soon. I have her some tylenol hopefully it will allow her enough relief to fall asleep. Her doctor said that these usually get really bad before they get better. I'm hoping that is all this is and it resolves itself soon.

  • One of my friends baby has on. It just kept getting bigger so she did her own research and discussed it with a specialist. She is now using a glycoma (not sure it's spelt right) topical cream. So far it has had the best results (no scabbing or growth).

Hope it gets figured out :)

I'll definitely look into this. It hasn't gotten bigger in a while, just started looking like the flesh eating virus all of a sudden.

  • DS has one on the top of his head. It has never bothered him though. The pedi said with the location of his it shouldn't cause him any problems. I'm still always worried I'm going to do something to make it bleed. She did say a dermatologist could laser it off (and she has recommended that to others who have them in spots where they are more likely to get irritated). She told me if it ever started bleeding and I can't stop it to call. If your LO is in pain though I would probably call tomorrow anyway and also keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected. Maybe they can at least give some sort of topical medication for pain or something? Hang in there, I know it's stressful when LO is hurting and hope she gets some relief soon.

Ekk. That's such an easy spot to irritate since our babies are always on their backs and now with all the movement they can do I am sure that irritates it more! Your poor girl! I'd guess that the irritation is def causing her sleeping difficulties esp if she moves as much as my LO does in his sleep. I know people say its a no no but could you try sleeping with her on your chest? As opposed to her back sleeping? Or propped with a wedge or boppy? Just to keep her movements/pressure of her body from causing irritation so you both can get a little sleep.

Hopefully they will give you an emergency appointment- really stress the bleeding and irritation when you call.

You guys will be in my thoughts, I know first hand how hard it
can be to deal with a skin issue and how hard it can be to get answers/results.

I might get flamed for this, but she has been sleeping on my chest or on her stomach. It's the only way she will sleep right now. We do co sleep so it's not like she's in another room.

  • My son has one on his backside, and it has bled a couple of times. We can get it to stop pretty easily though, and it doesn't seem to bother him afterwards. His is also kind of between his cheeks, so he doesn't lay directly on it. I hope she gets some relief soon!

  • No advice but hoping your LO feels better!

  • I hope you guys get some relief! I had a hemangioma on my shiulder. It started as a mole and the doctor said that the pregnancy caused it to flare up due to the extra blood flow (or something like that). I ended up having to get it removed. He said they usually go away in babies. Mine never got irritated though so I'm not sure what's going on there, but I hope it heals quickly!

  • My son his one on the top of his head. Thankfully it hasn't bled, but I'm so afraid to touch it. He has cradle cap, and I'm terrified to brush his hair anywhere near it. I'm sorry your little girl is going through this. I hope you get some relief soon.
  • If you can't get her into a specialist like, now, I'd consider going into the ER and seeing what they can offer, maybe a steroid shot or something :(

  • Ugh, I'm sorry you guys are dealing with that. :(

DD1 had one on her forehead. It started developing between months 1 and 2 and stopped growing around 6 months. It was about the size of a nickel. It started to fade and flatten sometime after 12 months and now, unless you're looking for it, it isn't even noticeable. Kind of just a grey spot.

I know there's a topical cream that can be used to flatten them, if needed. I think it was like blood pressure meds, but as a cream. I don't remember the specifics now. It was information my pedi was able to provide, though. Thankfully hers never irritated her so I didn't follow up on it, but it sounds like it would be helpful for you!

  • @RoosterMemphis Someone in my moms' group today mentioned topical Timolol for treating hemangioma. I know nothing about it, but thought of you when the topic came up. Maybe it's something you can ask your doctor about.
  • My LO has a very large one on her breast. It scares the crap out of me. I can't imagine it bleeding like the one your LO has. How awful for both of you. I hope the doctor was able to help. If you have time will you update us? Also, it's encouraging to hear others say they will go away. Our ped keeps telling me that, but her's is so big I sometimes doubt it will go away.
  • Keep us posted on how  she does and what the Ped says!!! Hoping it goes away very soon.

I'm late to the game - but my friend's LO has been prescribed propranolol for her hemangioma. Perhaps your LO will get a prescription? I hope it goes away!

    Edit: grammar. It's tough.
