Bulging Disc in Lower Back - Experiences?

Hi all,
I have a 9mm bulging disc in my lower spine, and as I gain weight (or lose) my back issues "flare-up" and cause a lot of unpleasant, sometimes debilitating pain.

Naturally, as I gain for the pregnancy, I have been experiencing some discomfort, but nothing out of the ordinary.
However, I am very afraid of how my body will adjust as it proceeds to change through-out the pregnancy.
Has anyone here, experienced the same thing, or at least something similar?

I know we're all different, and our bodies react differently... but knowing some of your stories/experiences, could possibly help me prepare for my future.

Re: Bulging Disc in Lower Back - Experiences?

  • I have 4 bulging discs in my spine. The worst one is at L4-L5 and the pain has been absolutely debilitating in the past. My spine doctor is very confident that I will feel "just great" during pregnancy but I'm definitely worried. I would keep a close eye on it and get into physical therapy if it starts hurting too much. The best thing I have found is to have my husband rub my back. I lay on my side with my spine facing away from him. He reaches over me and gently lifts my muscles up which alleviates a ton of pain!

  • I have a herniated disc lumbar. Had since 12/06. Once or twice a year it goes out on me to the point I can't walk, get out of bed nothing. Usually Vicodin, flexeral is what I need and about a week to rucoup w physical therapy.

Last time it went out was June. For about a week. I was in the 2ww at that time so I couldn't really take anything.

I went to PT and that helps soooo much. My physical therapist said if I did my excersises I should be good and might not have to go back to PT.

I talked to my OB a few years ago about becoming pregnant. She said carrying would be the worst. I need to strengthen my core that is very important with a bad back. Well didn't so that and I am 50# heavier than I should be without being pregnant.

I need to start doing my excersises now that I am not so exhausted. I also need to see if I can use the Roman Chair that is awesome for core strengthening I just bought before I became pregnant. Have not even had a chance to put it together yet. Highly recommended by my PT guy.

My disc is herniated not bulging. Maybe talk to your Dr to see what they suggest and see if you can talk to someone from PT.

Did you have an MRI done?

  • I've had an MRI and was doing spinal decompression until a few months ago (prior to getting preggo). Dragonfly, I have the exact experience when my back flares up. Have been dealing with back issues since 1999.
I need to contact my spinal place and see what they can do for me, if anything, during my pregnancy. Just waiting for the holidays to be over and for my schedule to get back on track.

    Thanks for your input ladies!
