Working moms + sick babies

I have missed so many days of work staying home with T. First he had this bad cough, then a fever and I just don't want to send him to DC before I am absolutely sure that he is feeling better (also don't want to get other babies sick as well). I know when it comes to fever, there is the 24 h rule, but other than that how are you handling the situation? Hubby cannot stay home with him and I don't have anyone else to watch him.

Re: Working moms + sick babies

  • I feel your pain.  My little one has been sick on and off for months.  There were times we had to do nebulizer treatments 4 times a day.  I was lucky that my boss understood and let me take some time off even though I had used up all my vacation days for my maternity leave.  And whenever I could, I worked from home or sometimes, I would catch up on work at night after he went to bed or after my husband came home.  I had the same concerns about infecting other kids at daycare and tried to keep him at home at first. Eventually, I had no choice but to take him to daycare.  I kept him home when he ran a fever but if he wasn't running a fever and when the dr told us that he isnt contagious (something about after 4 days, it's no longer contagious?) I took him to daycare.
Then I realized that the entire daycare room was coughing and sick anyway.....

  • my guy came home with a cold after the first week in daycare, but i never kept him home.  he was in a good mood, just had a runny nose, and would cough every once in awhile.  he's had a similar cold a few more times since then, it seems to just go around the daycare.  obviously if he was really sick, i'd keep him home.

as for time off of work, i think that i'd try to do some work at home, but i'd have to take vacation for any time that i couldn't make up.  my husband's work is a little more understanding about working from home, but it is also difficult for him to do that last minute because he usually has meeting scheduled.  ideally we'd be able to come up with some kind of split with the time so that we were both able to do some work, and stay home some.  it is hard - i don't get "sick" time, just general vacation time.  i rarely need to take time off for me being sick, so i've always been able to save all of my vacation time for fun things.  i think it will be an adjustment if i end up with very little time to use fun things.

  • The DH and I try to split the day.  We both are able to do our work from home.  When LO started daycare the whole room got the stomach flu on her 3rd day.  And then The DH and I got it too.  So we all stayed home.  Last week she came down with Croup.  But the Dr said she was fine to go to daycare so after her appt.  I took her.  You will figure it out.  And from what I have heard, after a year in Daycare they are immune to EVERYTHING.  SO here is hoping.

  • We are not doing DC so I can't help, but I couldn't help but tell you how adorable your LO is.
  • Thank you all! I think I am being overly cautious about sending him, and we gotta do what we gotta do!

@amie444 I keep reminding myself about the immunity thing.

@Beaslejl Aw thank you so much

  • I wish DH had a flexible schedule!

@libberluru unfortunately all family members and friends have jobs! I have missed almost two weeks worth of workdays in the past month. My boss is understanding, but this is pushing it!

  • It's tough but you learn fast that you follow the daycare rules a lot of days and that means sending a kid with a cough and runny nose a lot of days :-/  Seriously, if I kept the boys home for that I would never ever be at work so they're home for fevers and stomach ailments and not much else :(

  • DH has a ton of sick and vacation days banked so he tends to stay home unless I am needed. We all stayed home two days last week with a stomach bug. No one should have to care for kids alone when they are puking.

Luckily we haven't been too bad this fall. Few colds but I send them anyway. Kids need to build up an immune system and neither are immunocompromised so off to play they go.

I think by next August I should have some time off built back up so we can trade sick kid days. We tend to take turns based on work schedules and who stayed home the last time.
  • @subliminalrabbit hope you feel better!

  • We have been alternating days for illness or dcp closures (we get very few holidays, the dcp closes for more days). We just had our first stay home for illness day yesterday- she wasn't sick per dcp rules, but she was SO miserable I wanted to give her a day of one-on-one calm to help her feel better. She's back today and still stuffy, but the mild (1 degree) fever she had is gone, and she was smiling and playing by last night.
