Which of these would make a better Babymoon?

We've been trying to decide for weeks now where to go next month for a little babymoon/birthday getaway in January. I'll be 19 weeks at that time. I really want to go to San Francisco. ...its somewhere I've always wanted to go and there will be tons to do and great sightseeing. My husband is worried about the 4.5 flight time.

He would rather head south to Florida or somewhere like Savannah or Charleston. I would love to escape to some warm weather but we've been to Florida many times. I've heard Savannah and Charleston are nice but I'm not sure about the weather there in January or what to do there. The flight to these places would be like 1.5-2 hours.

Which of these sounds like a better babymoon? Somewhere you've always wanted to go even though its farther way and may keep you on your feet more or just heading somewhere warm and low key where you can just relax for the week? Opinions appreciated!

  • I live in Savannah. Weather is chilly but it's a beautiful city, same for Charleston. (And by chilly, like 65-75 degrees). It's a historical city with lots of tours. The main fun in Savannah is the food :) If you decide to come here, let me know I can make some suggestions!

  • I grew up in SF and I go to SC/Charleston every year - I keep trying to get to Savannah.  I think they are both fantastic choices - you can't go wrong either way.

  • I say go where you want to go and head to SF. That trip will just get harder to plan post baby, right? January is still early enough that you could handle sight seeing and the like.

  • I'd say if you want warm and low-key in January (vs. walking around and sight-seeing), you'd be better off in Florida than Savannah or Charleston.  DH and I go to Charleston pretty regularly (he has some major clients down there) and I find we do a lot of walking and sight-seeing while we're there.  They're both amazing towns, but if you're looking for more of a beach vibe, I'd head farther south.  You could be lucky and hit a warm spell (the Carolinas are headed for temps in the mid-70s this weekend), but January you won't get beach weather.
  • How long are you going for?  WIth the time change, flight time, etc- I would say San Fran only if you'll be spending a good amount of time there.  Also depends on what you're into.  Personally I love San Fran, but it is definitely an urban environment- so, not the most low-key or relaxing.  It is very eclectic, and a great food town.  Also the weather will likely not be great.  If it were my choice I would go to Savannah, Charleston, or Florida.  DH and I are also discussing a getaway in March or April and we'll likely head south.

  • SFO isn't always warm, but it is an AMAZING city to visit.  I could spend a week there and still not see everything on my hit list, and I've been there twice already.

Just out of curiosity..why  is your DH "worried" about a 4.5 hour flight? Is he afraid of flying?

  • These comments are making it harder to decide! Each city sounds like it has something unique to offer. We plan on going for 5 days.

  • Aww we really wanted to go to Savannah for our anniversary but didn't end up doing it....we had zero money saved for a vacation. I have trouble saving money for fun things and instead always try to pay off loans.

What I'm saying is, go to Savannah for me please!

  • My brother lives in SF, so we've been a few times. How long are you planning your trip for? We've always found a long weekend (Friday to Monday) to be plenty long enough. Granted, we're always there visiting family, not just sight seeing, which probably changes our experience of it. It is a wonderful place to visit, any time of the year, and I wouldn't let a 4.5 hour flight stop you. Is it direct? If so, 4.5 hours on a plane really doesn't seem too bad to me, and it's definitely better to do it now than next year, when you have a little one on board too!

  • I'm going to Savannah for my babymoon in March!
  • Savannah is one of my favorite cities in the US!  I love the food, architecture, warmth, southern charm, laid back, etc.  I agree with a PP that we walked a lot there.

I have also been to Charleston although it was a while ago.  I remember enjoying it but it was in the Spring and was warm.  I was supposed to go back a couple years ago but I ended up moving and canceling that trip.

I have also been to SF but I was little and remember only bits and pieces of it.

IMO, go where you really want to go!  Just make sure to get up and walk during the flight if it's 4.5 hrs.  Heck, I get up and walk on shorter flights too (my feet swell if I sit too long anywhere).

  • I would personally go somewhere where you can relax the most. Vacations are never the same post-baby. I can never completely relax because I always have DD on my mind. When I was 18 weeks alalong with DD, we went to FL to see my dad and go to the Daytona NASCAR race. We walked for miles that day. I was whipped after that. Luckily I was able to take my shoes off here and there because my feet kept swelling up like sausages.

  • I'm flying about 18 hours in January to go to New Zealand.  Last pregnancy I flew about the same amount of time to go to Taiwan.  Is he worried about the length of time for you, or because he doesn't like flying?  I just get up and walk every hour around the plane.  Second tri is actually a great time to travel.

I would go to SFO, because I can tell you that a 4.5 hour flight with a baby/child is *not* a good time (in my opinion), so better go now when you can and it's just the two of you.  It will be a lot easier to take a baby with you to the beach a couple of hours flight away.

  • SF! There is SO much to do! And it's somewhere you have always wanted to go.
I love it up there! I live about and hour and 45 mins away....
  • We had been discussing SF as a babymoon option, but I wanted to do warm and relaxing. I think the city would be too busy, and we do a Chicago weekend every spring anyway. We were leaving towards the Florida keys but hotels are crazy expensive if you wanna stay somewhere luxurious. I want to convince DH to do a 4-5 night cruise in February, I may bribe him with a nice scuba diving excursion (which would leave me time for a massage!). You can cruise up until 24 weeks on most cruise lines if that is something you would be interested in.

  • I got knocked up in Charleston -- but aside from that we were a bit disappointed in the trip. We liked Savannah so much more. It's a beautiful city, gorgeous squares and architecture and great food -- also way more affordable than Charleston.

I would also consider New Orleans. That is my favorite US city to visit -- the food can NOT be beat, and there is plenty to do besides drink, so don't let that put you off. Not sure where you're coming from exactly, but if you're looking at a 2 hour flight to Charleston, N.O. would likely be in the same range...

  • I've been to San Fran, and find it to be very much like Seattle, which is where I live. So if it were me, I would choose Savannah or Charleston!

  • SF is a tougher place with a baby so I'd go now when it will be just you and your husband!
Savannah and Charleston are amazing, but I think those would be places you could travel easily with your baby.
That's how I have been planning trips in my head :)
  • I grew up in San Francisco and now live right outside it, so I'm biased ;) But, I wouldn't let the flight time be a determining factor. I'm in India right now (DH's homeland) and it's about a 30 hour trip plus a more strenuous place to be. I can't lie, I was pretty sick on the flight (MS still hanging around a bit), but it was manageable. San Francisco can be wet and or cold in January, but there's also plenty to do indoors. Your choice should really depend on what you want to do on vacation.

  • It's going to be cooler and possibly rainy in January in SF. It's usually cooler than a lot of cities in Cali and way more foggy
