Did the pedi tell you....

At lo's one year appt I was told giving LO more than 24oz of whole milk a day could cause her to become anemic. Anyone else have input?

Re: Did the pedi tell you....

  • Nope.
He just asked WHAT LO was drinking since I said he was no longer BFing.

Our pedi did not specify anemia. He said that 16-24oz was the preferred range and that more than that could lead to other health issues due to him not getting enough nutrition from other food.

This is what our pedi told us

  • They told you that because calcium can inhibit the absorption of iron.
  • Just making sure cuz I thought I read another post where a baby was getting well above 24oz a day. I inquired about it there but no replies so just thought I would bring it up as a new thread. Thanks mommies

  • My pedi told us we could start the weaning process for WCM and I said that he was already done transitioning to CM. I told the nurse (who asked how much and she writes down) that I was giving LO a 5-6oz bottle before sleep, so for us nap time and bed time and that he gets offered a cup (about 4 oz) with bfast and sometimes he drinks it all and sometimes he doesn't. He drinks a shit ton of water though. Pedi didn't say I was doing anything wrong and if I was I'm sure she would have made a point to tell me otherwise.

I didn't really follow your post but not all pedis give 100% up to date advice.
Basically, my pedi didn't tell us anything we were doing wrong.
    My pedi talks about everything.

So are you telling me that I'm not giving my kid enough milk?

Uh what? No. I definitely didn't say that.
I didn't say you said I wasn't giving him enough. I am simply asking if I should be giving LO more and I am asking because you said 'pedis don't give up-to-date 100% advice'.

  • Oh gotcha. Miscommunication on my part. I just went back and read it all. Stupid pregnancy seems to real effect me this time around. No hard feelings. @pobrecita

  • Our pediatric nutritionist said the same thing about over 24 oz and anemia. DD doesn't like much water so she drinks a lot of milk. I'm just making sure that she is getting plenty of iron rich foods to hopefully counteract any damage the milk could be doing.
  • So my LO is very anemic, so I'm all up on the iron info. Milk contains a protein called casein which interferes with the absorption of iron. Giving a 1 year old more than, say, 3 cups a day will prevent iron uptake. As they are growing stores can deplete quickly.

My LO has been tested for a series of genetic disorders associated with anemia and appears to be healthy. She is likely anemic because I was anemic before I got pregnant. Her stores were likely low to begin with. They dip when she gets sick. We are trying to treat her anemia by giving her a doctor prescribed supplement daily in the absence of any milk product, mixing fortified baby cereal into regular oatmeal, making sure we give her a full serving (2 tbsp or more) of animal protein a day. We have been doing this for months and haven't seen much change, so we are now reducing her milk intake from 3 cups to 2.5 cups a day....and we will see.
