Car wreck and prescribed Norco?

So I was in a car wreck yesterday. A lady drove right into the side of my car, my driver door, while I was driving through a straight green light. It was a hard impact and my whole body hurts, which you'd expect. The baby is amazing. My OB happened to be in the hospital and came down to do the ultrasound in the ER for me. The baby was kicking and flailing arms and flipping. I was prescribed Norco, and while my pain absolutely sucks, I'm trying not to take it as prescribed (every 4 hours) because I feel like that's excessive. Has anyone else been prescribed Norco while pregnant? I know they wouldn't give me anything that's unsafe, I just can't help being nervous.

Re: Car wreck and prescribed Norco?

  • Nope.
maybe just take it before bed so you sleep okay?

I'm so glad you're both alright!!

Talk to your OB. If you're in pain, there can be very good reasons to take it, but let your OB be the judge.

The scheduled dosing (if it doesn't say every four hours AS NEEDED) is to keep pain from getting out of control and is supposed to help you keep from needing to double up on doses later...

  • Do some research on the internet about opiate use while pregnant. I'm pretty sure if not taken excessively its pretty safe. The big concern with opiates while pregnant is the withdrawals.. like people that are addicted and stay on for the 9 months the baby would be likely to go thru w/ds. Had a friend that got into accident at 7 months preg, was given morphine then vicoden & her son was born healthy. Glad u & LO are ok!!
  • Glad you & baby are ok!
I agree with others, talk to your OB about your concerns
  • Oh no, that's so scary. I'm glad that overall you and the baby are ok. No experience with that drug though, but I'd probably cut back on the dosage as well unless it was extremely necessary.

  • OP, do not use Tylenol while taking Norco without talking to your doctor first. Both contain acetaminophen.

    I'm sorry about your accident.

  • I actually take Vicodin (same as Norco) for a chronic pain condition I've had for years. It was my biggest concern when I found out I was pregnant. As long as you use it sparingly it should be fine. Besides, your OB is aware of it.  Vicodin is pretty far down the narcotic chain in terms of strength. OB didn't want me going off of it in case of withdrawal symptoms, and so far so good!

Same here I have chronic pain from my jaw being broken in 3 places. I've been on vicodine for 2 years. I went to ob appointment yesterday and lost weight. Doc asked if I was taking it so I can eat correctly I said I'm not to bc I'm scared to hurt the baby. He assured me it was safe, constant pain is stressful on the body and that's not good for the baby. He told me not eating correctly was much more dangerous then pain killers. He told me he expects for me to come on next month having gained weight because I'm taking my pain killers. Doctors orders lol take them correctly as prescribed honey
  • My sister was offered Norco at 35 weeks pregnant.  I took it after my c-section when I was nursing.  I think it should be ok, especially if your OB signed off on it.

  • Scary, but glad the baby is okay. My SIL has a pain pill addiction and probably took at least 30 Norco a day while pregnant, probably more. The baby turned out fine. So i think your probably good.

Apparently my MIL knew she was doing this, drinking energy drinks excessively, smoking pot and didn't say or do anything, we actually think she may have helped her acquire the pills. I did not win the in-law lottery.

The worst part was that she has a prescription, so if the baby pops positive she doesn't get any flags. It absolutely breaks my heart. My MIL wasn't much better when she had kids, (pill and drug addiction, arrested several times) so it's not really surprising that she didn't do anything.

It's also one of the many many reasons i do not want my MIL around my kid, and thankfully my DH agrees. My DH didn't really ever live with his mom growing up once his parents divorced, but his sisters did and it really shows.

  • Oh dear lord the apple doesn't fall far from the tree :( pain killers are highly addictive which is one if the reasons I stated " take medication as prescribed". You Dh is truly blessed to not have grown up in the environment and realize it's incredibly dis functional. That he agrees with you and your baby will be protective is awesome. My heartbreaks for your SIL's baby :( an innocent child that has fallen through the cracks
  • Holly, just want to say thanks for your perspective. Sorry you have such continual pain. I also broke my jaw a number of years ago (2 places; bicycle accident) but am lucky to not really have pain, just lots of numbness.

It's true though; chronic pain is really bad for you and baby. Of course, so is addiction. Be cautious, but don't deny yourself pain meds as prescribed and cleared by OB as you could make things worse.
