low amniotic fluid UPDATE

Just got home from my routine appt. I have an anterior placenta & have had minimal movement so they did a quick ultrasound to ease my worries. She was wiggling around, heart rate perfect. I just had the anatmony scan almost 3week ago.

I went back to see the Dr he said he is concerned because the amniotic fluid dropped & he is concerned. They are trying to get me in asap to see a specialist to figure something out what's going on asap. I am freaking out & just waiting for the specialist to call to tell me when I can come in. Has anyone else experienced this with a positive outcom??

Update: went to specialist bright & early. Everything looks great & normal. All organs, blood flow, heart etc are right where they should be. Baby has grown from 13oz at 20 weeks to 1.5lbs now. We questioned the doctors concern & alarm and the specialist said that they may have noticed low fluid in one area but he checks the entire average of the sac and I am in normal range. That my regular gyn probably just wanted to cover his tracks....

  • I read your amniotic fluid can start to get low if you're not drinking enough water? But it could be totally wrong, In sure your dr will let you know anything you need !
  • At my last appointment, the midwife said that the amount of water you drink doesn't alter the level of the amniotic fluid much, but if there's a problem with the amniotic fluid, that it's not because of anything you did.  Hopefully that helps you keep from beating yourself up at all...*hugs*

  • My sister developed low amniotic fluid in her third trimester (a bit farther along than you).  They tracked her much more closely after that.  She had extra u/s and apts.  They did end up inducing her a bit early 1-2 weeks because of it.  My niece is 11 though so now they might have something they can do for low amniotic fluid now that they didn't have back then.  Try to relax (I know not easy) and wait to see what the specialist says and take it easy on yourself until then.  Nothing you did caused this.

The American pregnancy association does cite maternal dehydration as well as diabetes, high blood pressure and a host of other things to be known causes of low amniotic fluid.
  • I had low amniotic fluid at 35 weeks and was sent to the hospital for IV fluids. I wasn't necessarily dehydrated but they wanted to pump more fluids in to see if it helped. It did help, but only for a few days and then it was low again which resulted in a c-section at 36 weeks. The only thing I'm doing differently this time is making sure I drink A LOT of water and will be monitored every week after 32 weeks. My only stuggestion is to drink drink drink!!

    According to Pp's we're wrong.
  • If we were wrong then by me getting 3 liters of IV fluids wouldn't have raised my amniotic fluid... Which it did. Drinking more water can help... You may have an underlying issue that has nothing to do with dehydration causing the low fluid but drinking a lot of water can help.
  • I have an appt with the specialist tomorrow at 7:30am. Going to be a long night . When the office called back the nurse said that the doctor went over my records ,& didn't find it to be an emergency & would have waited until next week to see me but since I am leaving for vacation for 2weeks Saturday they would get me in right away. So, that is somewhat comforting.

In the meantime I am resting & downing the water. Will be a restless night....

  • Goodluck girl! It will be ok
  • My amniotc fluid level dropped very much around 20 weeks ( last pregnancy). Doctors said it was because my blood clotting disorder, trombophilia. I didn`t know about that then.
Now I`m on blood thinner injections and baby aspirin.
