Weird NIP encounter today (Long)

So even though I go out with LO almost daily, today was only the second time I have had to nurse in public (I don't count Mom's group or my car).

My DH, LO and I were at the mall and LO woke up from a nap SCREAMING for food. I remembered that Sears has recliner chairs for sale so we bolted towards Sears. It was the PERFECT nursing spot. Pretty secluded and facing away from the main aisle. My husband took off to shop and I sat there nursing LO. A few people came by us, no big deal.

Then an Indian man in his late 30's comes over to me.. While I'm nursing, LO is NOT under a blanket or cover, you can clearly see her- a baby- laying across me. I have the stroller parked right there. I'm sitting all reclined, my feet up and comfy.. And he asks in good English with an American accent "Where can I find an iron table?"

I just said "Sorry, I don't work here." And he said "oh okay." And walked away.

Really!? Because store employees usually sit in recliner chairs with their feet up with a baby and stroller and shopping bags?

What was with that? Anyone have any insight?

Sorry, I know it was a long story but I wanted to set the scene!

  • Not sure what his being Indian has to do with the story.

  • ^^ are we really playing the race card? She's describing the guy who came up to her.

Anyway! I had an elderly lady come up to me in the commissary and ask where the baby stuff was as I'm wearing him. I tell her I don't know and she's like well you should, you have a baby. I wanted to ask her if she knew where the depends were bc she was old. Ppl can be very frustrating.

I would pay to see the look on her face if you did say that lol.

  • Hold up!!

You sat down to nurse on their merchandise?

ETA:  I guess that can be my UO since it's Thursday -- If you're knowingly going to exchange bodily fluids, it shouldn't be done on a company's merchandise.
This is the same thing I thought.

    Agreed.

For that matter, what does his being a man have to do with the story also?

    Mentioning race shouldn't be taboo.
  • I don't shop at Sears but in almost all stores, furniture on display is a floor model and not "merchandise" so big whoop to using one of the recliners to nurse in. I've seen women nurse in the gliders on display at BRU and BBB as well and it seems like no big deal to me.

I also don't get the point of describing the man's heritage or accent, and chances are, like PP said, he was hoping a stranger in the store might have an idea where something was located if he couldn't find an employee to help him. This whole post seems like a nonissue.

  • I guess my attempt at thorough descriptions did not accurately convey the incident and it was a 'you had to be there' moment.
