Forgot how to roll over?

My LO had been rolling over from tummy to back very consistently for the past three weeks. Now, when I put him on his tummy he just fusses and eventually starts to cry - much like he did before he started rolling over. Eventually I help him roll to his back, but it's almost like he forgot how to do this on his own. I'm not super concerned... just wondering if anyone else has been through this?

Re: Forgot how to roll over?

  • Yes. I think it's just that right now, there are SO many new things that they are learning everyday that they can't keep everything straight. Keep working with him and he will catch back on!

  • My LO started rolling tummy to back consistently and purposefully (not by accident) about 2 weeks ago, but she has some days/times that she just doesn't want to do it and will fuss when put on her tummy. I just give her regular chance to "practice" and help her or pick her up if she gets agitated.

  • Yes, going through the same thing.
  • My lo started sitting a few days ago and now that's all he wants to do during his awake time. He gets really agitated if I put him on his tummy or back. It does seem like he totally forgot how to roll!

They don't forget, they just focus on other skills? At this point, you don't necessarily want LO to roll off their belly because you want him to strengthen his core so he can start lifting his belly and eventually crawl!

  • Not to hijack this post, but how can I encourage Layla to roll over? She has only rolled over 1x and it was an accident, at 2 months. We'll playfully roll her with a blanket by carefully lifting up a side and supporting her at the same time. But how should her arm be? Should it be tucked under, straight up, or down at her side? I know this sounds really dumb, but it never looks like she's in a good/comfortable position to roll.

This post proves my point. He didn't forget how to roll, because he learned/is learning how to sit, that's where his focus is.

  • It's normal. Usually when they are about to learn something new, they forget how to do something.

  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone. That makes a lot of sense. (So much sense I'm embarrassed it didn't occur to me... :\"> )
  • @kebert618 Today I was also wondering how I could get him to roll over. He did it!! Three times. He seemed like he was never going to. He stretched his one arm out straight on front of him and rolled over that arm. So I put him back on his tummy, pulled that same arm straight again, put a toy on that side and he did it again. I cheered a lot and he thought it was funny. So we did it again.

Was his arm straight up or to the side? We work on it everyday...she's just not overly excitd q out doing it on her own.But when I do get her to roll over, she gets excited!

We didn't do a lot of tummy time the first month because she would scream...so she has a little bit of catching up to do. It was pretty much overnight that she could prop herself up really well...so I think rolling may just suddenly happen as well!

His arm was straight out in front of him (like he is raising his hand) and the other hand is palm flat pushing up.

I used a tumzee for the first three months so he never really had a chance to roll. I thought he would need to play catch up but it literally just happened out of no where. He has done it twice more today.
