Another big kid bed question

We plan on keeping Zachary in his crib until he is about two (unless he starts climbing out before).  The question then comes, do we get a toddler bed or could we just do a regular twin sized bed?  The second option would have never crossed my mind, but my sister did it with her kid shortly after he turned two, just left the matress on the floor for a while.  We are starting to get furniture for his new room which is why I am thinking about this already.

  • We are going to take the front panel on DS's crib and let him use that for a while as a toddler bed. We ended up getting DD her own crib so we will do the same for her. If we weren't going this route we were going to go right to a twin bed.

  • We are trying to make the transition with the new baby seamless too.  We are moving the crib to Z's new room before the baby is born so he'll still have his bed in less than familar surroundings.  Like I said before we are going to try to transition out of the crib in July and move it back into the nursery.  I'm hoping 2 months between baby being born and getting a new bed is plenty of time so he doesn't feel like there are too many changes at once.

  • If ours didn't convert, we would go straight to a full size probably and just leave the mattress on the floor for awhile.

  • Our plan is to do a regular queen size bed (we have a spare). We may start with just a matress on the ground as well.

  • With our first we changed his crib into a toddler bed and he slept terrible, so we switched him to a twin mattress on the floor and he did great. If you are having to buy a toddler bed, get a twin instead since they aren't in the toddler bed too long.

  • Our crib converts, but we would have to buy the kit so we'll just put that money towards a twin bed and start out with the mattress on the floor. We did buy a second crib for the new baby though because Anna will move upstairs (we're on the main floor) and I didn't like the thought of her roaming around upstairs just yet.
