Early ultrasound, 2 sacs, 1 heartbeat

hi ladies! I'm not sure how long I will be sticking around on this board, and never thought I might be here, but after a few miscarriages and no fertility treatments, I'm 6w2d and had my ultrasound today. What a shock! One baby is perfect... Strong heartbeat, yolk sac, gest sac, etc. Second sac is smaller and no heartbeat, but still has developed fetal pole. Omg?! Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on early development and viability! My OB said it could go either way and I'm preparing for the worst (losing both) just because I can't get my hopes crushed again. I go in for repeat ultrasound in 2 weeks and will definitively know by then, but...sheesh! I'm just looking for piece of (crazy) mind until then

Like your OB said it could go either way. Do you have a picture of your ultrasound? Some things to look for is if the second sac had a double ring around it. Was it nice and round or did it look like it was collapsing? How much did the fetal pole measure? Was there a yolk sac? Was there any blood pooling around the second sac? Are you experiencing any bleeding?

Basically this early in the game, it is hard to say what will happen but there is the real possibility that second baby is just a few days behind and by your next appt he/she will be there with a strong heartbeat. Sucks to say but only time will tell. It is so hard to wait though. Big hugs.

I dont have the measurements, but the sac looks not perfectly round, no. Perhaps collapsing I guess? Yes, there was a yolk sac and the doctor said the fetal pole was measuring in lune with baby A, which had the larger gestational sac.

This happened to me. I did IVF and transferred two embryos. At 6 weeks 3 days I started bleeding heavily and went to the ER...they performed my first ultrasound and told me there were two sacs but only one baby had a heartbeat. They told me the other one started to implant but didn't make it. We were very surprised when we went to my RE for my first "real" ultrasound 3 days later and there were 2 heartbeats! So, like pp said, it could go either way. FWIW- my girls only measured 1-2 days apart in early pregnancy and by 10 weeks measured exactly the same. One of them just must have implanted later.

Sounds similar to mine. My baby "b" wasn't hardly ever visible and was measuring a month behind ( a week behind at my 6 week and just a pole was visible) and a month behind from week 8-13. they told me he would vanish. Weeks went by his sac never grew and he had no amniotic fluid and a very weak heartbeat. Until week 15 when suddenly he gains fluid caught up in growth and is now my biggest twin who currently is staring me down to be nursed

him and his brother are 5 weeks old and perfectly healthy little babies who are complete snuggle bugs! I know it's so hard to stay positive but rest, stay off google!, drin tons and tons of water, and try not to stress. Keep us updated and hope you will be joining us!! Congrats on the pregnancy!

It is really promising that there was a yolk sac. I would also ask to be seen sooner. Two weeks is kind of a long time to be in limbo. Big hugs. I hope you get to stay!

Thank you ladies for sharing your stories. I am trying to maintain hope! And yes,two weeks is tough but because of the holidays... That's likely why. Regardless, I'm hoping that at 8 weeks baby A will still be healthy since I have history of m/c, and we will have to see about baby B?! I can't even comprehend this possibility and am trying to take each day as a gift without bleeding or incidence.

My baby b is similar to the other stories. I found there were two sacs, we went back a 6.5 weeks and only A was really measurable and had a strong heartbeat. I was told it was probably a vanishing twin and 4 days later started to bleed. I went back to the doctor and baby b had grown dramatically with a strong heartbeat. The bleeding was caused by a bloodclot. Each week B caught up by a day and at 28 weeks b is now larger. I wish you the best. It was a clusterfuck of a ride but it is possible!

Were your sacs of comparable size at the time of ultrasound? I have one which is smaller, enough for it to be noticeable but yet there's still fetal pole, yolk sac, etc.

Here are some of my ultrasound photos. First or is my first ultrasound that confirmed it was twins and not triplets. The next two was a little later they are labeled A and B and you can see how crazy the difference is with gestational sac size... Infant or was such a big size difference they had to put it on two separate pictures that's why they aren't in one together. The last is where you can see one baby looks very much like a baby with healthy fluid levels and B is severely lagging and hard to tell it's even a baby. I also had SCB the whole first trimester. Next to B. But then it all turned around and they are very healthy boys. Hope that helps some being able to see my U/S to compare too. We also had 3 late tri miscarriages it's an awful feeling and it makes it very hard to enjoy the pregnancy. But as pp said today you are pregnant and that's all that matters. Also they are 3 different colors because they were done at my ON/GYN then the hospital and then the MFM doctor

At my first ultrasound I had the same situation - two sacs visible, only one had a heartbeat. Two weeks later they had both progressed just fine, but the doctor did caution me that there was a very good chance it wouldn't happen that way.

Incredible stuff! I guess you never can plan what your body is capable of. So much uncertainty. I just wish there was a magic way of fast forwarding to find out

I will keep everyone posted, and if I stay on thus board, I'd love to have new friends.... This is crazy. Twins don't run in either side of our family!
