In light of some of the recent conversations, it's very easy to get disillusioned with the state of things, so I will share a story to give you the warm and fuzzies.
We got a new student today. The teachers knew ahead of time, that it was a boy on the autism spectrum. The boy had my class first and he sat next to another boy who is friendly, but kind of tries to be "the cool" kid in class and can sometimes act a bit smug. I introduced the new boy to his seat neighbor, and this sometimes cocky boy, stuck out his hand and in the most kind and sincere manner shook this boy's hand and introduced himself. He later offered to share paper with him for an assignment. My teacher heart was so happy. It made me stop and realize, I see kindnesses like this every day. Honestly. Every.single.day. I see kids helping each other with fallen books, a polite exchange to get into too close lockers. They are empathetic, sweet and understanding. They want to please adults. They beam at positive reinforcement. They say "thank you" to their teachers as they leave the class. There truly are good, good kids out there. They just don't get enough press.
Re: To restore faith in humanity...
I try to remind myself of that fact whenever I start to feel impatient or frustrated.
