Craving vs. Heartburn

So if a major trigger dish is loudly calling your name but you know it will give you horrible heartburn... what do you do? (inspired by a lunch dilemma which may or may not involve tomato soup and a greasy burger).

I said ss because I chew 3 papaya enzyme tabs before eating it and 2 shortly after to keep the heartburn at bay. I still get it, but not nearly as bad. And I get the yummy trigger (lately it's been healthy stuff like the vinegar on my salad I KNOW I need).

  • I'd totally eat it because I haven't found any food that taking papaya enzymes or chewing gum hasn't fixed the heartburn.

@sugarland726 - But what if you knew it couldn't fix it? Would you go the prudent or the indulgent route?? Maybe I need to give the papaya another go. It wasn't doing much for me several weeks ago (and neither were calcium, gum, etc.). But as long as I avoid what I know are triggers I'm generally just fine. But sometimes. I. Just. Can't.

  • I picked SS because it depends on the time of day. If it's for lunch, I would totally eat it. But my heartburn at night has been making me throw up at 3am two nights in a row, so I'd avoid it at dinner.

Two pills didn't do squat for me. Three pills made a difference though. Try upping how many you are taking to see if that helps. If I knew it couldn't be fixed by those things, I'd probably try and avoid the food.

  • I give in and eat it then curse myself later - like homemade pizza last night.  Woke up and wanted to cry since Tums does nothing.  HOWEVER - usually I'm able to fall asleep and don't have to deal with it for too long, if I knew I couldn't get any relief, I'd refrain or at least tone it down some.

  • @ANDYLEAH - i imagine you saying that with a devilish chuckle while appearing with horns and a trident over my right shoulder.

  • I'm with @peanutmuse on this one. If it's earlier in the day of go for it. Anything dinner related or after I'd say no.

  • SS.

Depends on how good it is.

I already know I'm going to eat the hell out of some homemade stromboli on Christmas Eve when my mom comes over and we spend the day in the kitchen fixing it and catching up on our Real Housewives, and I already know that I'm going to hate myself later when the heartburn kicks in. But it'll be totally worth it.

At the same time, I'd turn down a pasta dish with an acidic sauce because it's not worth the trouble. I can have pasta whenever.

  • Considering that even milk and water are giving me heartburn, I eat ALL the things. I just have Zantac and Tums Smoothies on hand at all times.

Although I'm sorry you're going through this (in addition to all your other craptastic issues) I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one hugging the toilet at 3am with acidic viper vomit.

  • Unfortunately, I can't really tell what gives me heartburn. It seems like I just get it pretty much every night no matter what, so bring on whatever noms I want. So few things have sounded edible since my BFP, so if it sounds like I could eat it and not want to hurl, I eat it.
  • I had this dilemma last night for supper. I caved to the craving, and enjoyed a sleepless night. I'd probably do it again, it was fricken delicious!!!!

  • Well looks like many of us are suffering but indulging our cravings never-the-less! :) Which is what I did as well - and am now paying for it... I didn't realize that I'm lucky that my heartburn really only flares up during the day and doesn't interrupt my sleep much. Sorry for all you ladies who are up nightly!

  • My heartburn was under control for about 2 weeks this pregnancy, and now it's horrible again (37 weeks). Water seems to be a huge trigger for me, and I have it morning, noon and all night. Even the rx my dr. Gave me only provides partial relief. Last night at about 10:30, I asked my Dh to run to the convenient store- I had run out of tums! And there is no way I can make it over night with out them.
  • Everything can give me heartburn. But if I know it's a food that'll make it super worse I usually go by how I feel that day. If I've already been sick/had reflux all day, I'll pass. If I've been feeling good I'll go for it. Like last night's spaghetti.

  • I said SS precisely because my heartburn is so extremely bad and predates pregnancy.  I'm going to be in pain even if I don't eat anything at all, so pretty much every meal is a tradeoff.  Sometimes I do push it, just a little bit, so I can eat something interesting.

But yeah, some foods are definitely not worth the pain.
  • I get it every night and most nights get up to hug the toilet to get some relieve so I would not. This is one thing I can't wait to go away!!
  • I voted eat it. Everything gives me heartburn so it doesn't matter what I do.
