BLW mamas....question~

I do BLW also, but in some of the other threads/questions I've seen on here about foods and what to give baby for meals and such, I've seen an example for a breakfast is oatmeal. my question is, do you make and prepare your baby's oatmeal the same way you would do for yourself? You don't mean the baby "powdered" oatmeal right? do you add anything to the oatmeal, like fruit, cinnamon or ? just curious. Since I eat oatmeal a couple times a week, DS eats out of my bowl, but I add brown sugar and 2% milk to mine (don't flame me for the sugar and milk) :/

Re: BLW mamas....question~

  • I don't give DS oatmeal, but only because he pretty much refuses to eat anything off a spoon lol. If I did, I would just give him regular oatmeal though.

  • When we started giving dd oatmeal I put it in the food processor. I still have a little left because I did a lot! Now she has eaten mine when I am eating it for my breakfast often. The only time she eats it ground up is when I make it just for her. Sometimes I will put in some apple sauce if ds is eating some too! We do loaded spoons also.

  • We rarely do spoon items because she tries to grab them and it isn't really a fun meal compared to just giving her some Cheerios and fruit.  When she was smaller and I was afraid to give Cheerios, I would mix some pureed fruit with the baby oatmeal. I read that you should not use regular oatmeal...I think it was because if LO regularly eats oatmeal, it needs to have iron added like baby oatmeal does since getting enough iron is one of the big nutritional needs at this point.  I also add sugar and milk to my oatmeal, but wouldn't to hers since I'm trying to not create a sugar addict (like I am).
  • We do baby oatmeal with BM. Only reason is LO got a container for trick or treat from DH's sister. She has 3 kids (5, 3 & 1) and is also a nurse. It was a super sweet gesture, but I was rather bummed that LO didn't get gobs of chocolate (for momma to enjoy of course!). I probably would not have bought any baby oatmeal myself.
  • You can also try making oat fingers. Equal parts milk or water with equal parts rolled oats. Microwave for 2 minutes. Cut into the shapes you want and then chill in the fridge. They will solidify up enough for your bub to grab with fingers. And you can add flavouring if you want... Cinnamon, apple sauce... Etc. But we just do preloaded spoons now because he gets practice. And he likes what I am eating better than what I put the energy into preparing for him.

Oh too true! The little man just loves to laught at me while I try to pick up his messes too! Haha. Even Cheerios. He just throws them around and watches me play pick up and giggles and giggles. What a buthead!
