Raw Red Butt

My poor Lo has been pooping non stop(every diaper change) the past couple of days and its more runnier than usual. Im wondering if he is finally getting his first tooth.  He has been acting like hes been teething since 4 months old.  He also has a runny nose and more drool than normal. He wants to chew on things non stop too.

Is there anything I can do to help his raw butt?  Its completely red and raw, no bumps. He screams when I go to change him.  I dont know what else to do to help the runniess of his poop too.  I ve heard this can come with teething.  I typically use A and D with every diaper change. I tried to not use baby wipes too and just used a damp cloth.  Poor LO!

Re: Raw Red Butt

  • You may want to buy a tub of Aquaphor....that stuff is so amazing that our ODSs urologist highly recommends the stuff after surgeries. It heals everything. Like PP said you may want to go diaper free some, and I would pat him dry with a clean towel after each change. You may want to use paper towels and water as wipes too, since the wipes have alcohol that can irritate a sore butt.

  • Ok so you put the Aquaphor on at each diaper change instead of diaper creme or how often?
  • This happened to us. We used A&D but decided to try Boudreaux Butt Paste when it wasn't getting better and it worked. Good luck

  • Make sure also that your LOs behind is completely dry otherwise the ointment can trap moisture.

I think @FmrAFBrat 's advice is really good (I am taking your notes for the future), and I would second @stephzrn 's suggestion for Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It really does work wonders with very few ingredients.

ETA because I should have said this first: I'm sorry he's having such a rough go with it. I hope his little butt gets better soon!

..you might want to talk to your pedi because the diarrhea it might not be because of the teething.
extra strength desitin works well for the red but.

Yes. I do it after each change. Aquaphor is wonderful at letting things heal and keeping the bad stuff out. Just make sure LOs butt is completely dry. This sounds horrible, but I use the same procedure with diaper rash as I did after my ODS had surgery on his urethra.

I do still use stuff like Butt Paste, Desitin, & Balmex as a preventative for rashes since they all have the same active ingredients as each other, but for bad stuff (& skin rashes ) I use Aquaphor.

  • You may want to try soaking his tush in a baking soda bath, then air dry and apply your preferred ointment. I did this Friday night and she was pretty much cleared up by morning.

  • I have no scientific evidence for my suggestion, but we use the Desitin in the yellow bottle.  It's petroleum jelly based rather than whatever the white cream is made out of, and seems a lot gentler for our LO.  She had diarrhea after an antibiotic for an ear infection, and our pedi gave us prescription nystatin to use if the skin got raw and it cleared within a day.

  • We had the same issue when LO had diarrhea a few months ago.  We had been trying Desitin, and it barely made a difference.  We switched to Triple Paste, and his butt got better right away.
  • Also, talk to your pediatrician about the diarrhea. You might need to start Pedialyte so that LO doesn't get dehydrated.
  • You can also mix Aquaphor with Maalox liquid.  The Maalox helps cut the acidity of the urine and stools and helps relieve the burning.
