Did Your Water Break?

I know on TV, everyone's water breaks before they go into labor... I didn't have the experience with my last labor and was wondering (because it doesn't seem as common as claimed) how many of you ladies' water broke on its own?

Re: Did Your Water Break?

  • I don't know if this is accurate, but the l&d nurse that taught the birthing class I took said only something like 10-12% of women experience their water fully breaking on it's own.

  • SS: I was admitted and they were going to break my water, but decided not to at that point as she was still a little high and didn't want the possibility of the cord wrapping around her neck. An hour later I had a check and they thought it had broke, but wasn't positive. Another check 20 min later and she said "oh yes, your water did break, and you are complete, I'm calling the dr in now"

  • My water broke at 9cm at the hospital... During a cervix check... During a contraction... Which option would that be?? :P

  • I didn't vote because I've had both scenarios. My water broke on its own my first pregnancy, but my next two pregnancies were both RCS.

Mine broke on its own. Huge gush! By the time my husband and I got to the hospital which was about 15 minutes I had a puddle on the floor mat in the car, and left a trail into the hospital. They also think I had too much water.
  • My water broke on its own with my first pregnancy. I'm still pregnant so we'll see what happens this time!

    Same here, with both pregnancies.

  • Um, both? lol. My water broke a little on it's own, and then the mw broke it fully right before I started pushing.
It broke on its own with dd and the mw broke it with my other ds.

  • I had been asleep for about 2 hours got up to go to the bathroom then got back into bed, crossed my legs and leaned over to get my Chapstick and felt a pop in my side and felt the gush. I ran to the bathroom put a huge pad on and called DH. He had only been home long enough to eat something so he had no sleep that night!!
I felt it pop not sure if others felt it when theirs broke

  • I was induced with cytotec but my water broke on its own during a contraction.
With my last pregnancy, I was not induced and the doctor broke my water when I was at about 7-8 cm.

  • Dr broke my water with my first to help progress my labor. The next two pregnancies my water broke on it's own before I was in labor and they were completely different. With ds I had a very slow leak and with dd I had some kind of god awful vagina waterfall that wouldn't stop, even the nurse commented on how much AF I was constantly leaking, it just gushed all the time. I was glad when I got the epi I stopped feeling it gush out because it was so uncomfortable to be constantly gushing fluid all over myself(I think we went through fifty of those adsorbent bed liner things).

This is what I was told during my 1st pregnancy birthing class. We must just have a very fluid-y group ;)

  • Mine broke on its own right after a contraction. I felt/ heard a pop and it all came gushing out. I went through three pads by the time DH got home and we left (45-30 minutes).

I've always been so worried about it breaking in bed! I've heard of some ladies putting shower curtains under their sheets or whatever to stop it from going into the mattress in case in DOES happen, haha!

@thetheisens "Vagina waterfall" is officially on my list of favorite sayings from TB.
It seriously was though. I swear the IV fluid was going in my arm and coming straight out my vag.

  • Mine  broke on its own just as I was ready to start pushing. The doctor would have broken it if I hadn't asked him to allow things to progress as naturally as possible.

What does it mean when you have two water sacks? I've never heard of that.

  • First time it was broken during induction. The second time dr broke it at 9 cm and then I immediately had to push. This time it broke on its own and felt an immediate very strong urge to push.
