Those who do EASY or eat, wake, sleep.

We followed the eat, wake, sleep schedule with DD (that was 3 1/2 years ago). My twins are 12 days old and I'm wondering when to start this again with them. Right now its super hard even to get the to wake up to eat, so keeping them awake after feeding seems almost impossible at the moment. When did you start this type of schedule with your twins?

DH went back to work today so I'm trying to figure out some sort of schedule.

I don't know either. My twins are 8 weeks old, but were born at 32 weeks so they've just reached their due date. They almost always fall asleep nursing or fall asleep right after nursing, so I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong or just a factor of their age (they are just starting to be awake more.)
Married 8/2008. IVF with PGD March 2013.
    3/22 ER: 25R, 20M, 15F. 9 genetically normal, and 3 survived to Day 5
    3/27 ET: transferred 1 embryo, beta 9dp5dt=163, 12dp5dt=639
4/25 1st ultrasound at 7 weeks = identical twins with heartbeats?!!!
PPROM at 31w, delivery at 32 weeks of two beautiful girls

  • We do it, but it wasn't forced at all. If they want to sleep, I let them sleep. When they were that little - it was all about survival and most of the time, they slept all the time.

I logged all of their feedings for the first three months to look for patterns of eating. I tandem BF and for better or worse, it's really hard to get both babies off me and keep them asleep. So they ended up waking up after eating and that just became a habit.

But nothing even came close to resembling a schedule until after 3mo.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong at all! The boy I nannied was on a wake, play, eat, sleep schedule: his bottle always came immediately before his nap (Granted, not mine, but still relative to the question). I think it's like a nap on Thanksgiving, where after a full belly, all anyone wants to do is nap.
  • We started EASY when the babies started having more awake time on their own. When they were brand new they were super sleepy so all they really did was eat and sleep, but sometime around 2 months they were more alert after feedings, so the pattern kind of emerged on its own. At the very beginning, I think even something as brief as a diaper change can count as "awake" time, kwim?

  • I EBF. We fell into the EASY schedule pretty quickly. I just fed them whenever they woke up and then we had some activity. Sometimes after eating, changing, etc they only had about 20 min left of awake time but that stretched over time. It worked early in though since they weren't usually hungry again before it was time to go back to sleep. When one woke to eat I would wake the other and feed them both. Around five months they fell into a schedule that went by the clock.

  • 4 months is about when I could try any kind of schedule with any of my kids. Before that, you're a little at their mercy still, thigh you can start easyish routines (awake time might just be 15 minutes though!)
