Need advice regarding doula gift(s)!

We decided to hire a doula to attend our birth because I had a goal of having a natural birth.  Well the doula that we ended up hiring was part of a team of 2 doulas.  Both doulas came to the one prenatal and one postnatal meetings and I was in communication with both of them with any questions I had, which were sent in a few emails/texts.  However, only one of them (Sarah) attended the actual birth and we also had one postnatal meeting with just her.  Well now that I want to buy them a thank you gift, I'm kind of stuck.  For Sarah, I plan to buy her a gift card and a Christmas ornament that says "Thank you for helping us acheive a beautiful birth".  I will buy either the same ornament or gift card (either or) for the 2nd doula that didn't attend the birth (Mollie) since she did provide support prior to and after the birth.  My question is, for Mollie's one gift should I get her the more personalized ornament or should I get the gift card?  I'm leaning toward getting the keepsake ornament only for Sarah, since she was the one actually at the birth, but I'm indecisive and I really just can't make up my mind (doesn't help that I'm sleep deprived)...  Let me know your thoughts or if you can think of any better options altogether.  Thanks in advance!!!

  • If they work together and will see eachother's gifts, then I say buy for both. No one's going to be hurt because they got the same gift as the other person, but someone might be hurt if you can look at the two gifts and say, "Wow, that one is so much more special and thought out."

  • I would lean towards getting them the same gift. Even though the second doula did not attend your birth it sounds like she was a big part of the prenatal and postnatal process which is really important to. The ornament is a great idea and one that I think they will appreciate. For the gift cards you could always get them in a different amount. So for the one who attended the birth get her say a $50 card and for the other a $25-35 card.
  • It never even occurred to me to give my doula anything. I have given her several referrals though!
  • Was the 2nd doula her backup or truly they work together? I have backups that if the client wants to meet tags along to a prenatal. She doesn't get paid unless I don't attend the actual birth, the she gets half my fee. So, I guess it depends on the actual setup of the business whether I'd get them both a gift. I'd get the one who didn't attend the birth a smaller but still nice gift or a gift card.
