MOTN wake ups

Usually when LO wakes up, (she sleeps next to our bed in the pnp) and she's just kind of fussing, I will put her pacifier back in her mouth and she falls right back asleep. Sometimes I do this numerous times a night, sometimes just one or twice. If she is completely awake, or is actually crying, that's when I get her up and feed her and rock her back to sleep. Is it wrong of me to use her pacifier unless she is actually awake? Or is she waking up for a reason and I should feed her each time? What do you do?

  • I think it's ok. I am sure LO would let you know if the paci wasn't satisfying.

  • If Mason wakes up and I hear him fussing a little i will wait to see if he can fall back to sleep on his own first. If he keeps fussing then I know he needs to eat. He doesn't really wake up for anything other than to eat. Have you tried to see if she will just fall back to sleep without the paci? I'm trying to have lo get the hang of soothing himself when he wakes in the night.

  • I think if she's satisfied with her pacifier, it's fine! I know if DS has to be changed, he'll start squirming around. If he's just fussing he usually just needs some soothing.
  • For us, fussing = paci.  Full on cry = hungry.  I don't think you're doing anything wrong.

  • I was up last night thinking the exact same thing. He wakes up to eat around 2-4am. Lately he is then stirring at 5ish. Last night I just gave him his soother and he went back to sleep. My thinking was I will try the soother and if he wants to nurse he will let me know.

  • Meh, if she's content when you give her the paci I think it's safe to say she's waking because she wants the paci.

This exactly. We always try paci first (unless she's actually crying) then if she continues to fuss I feed.
  • If the paci works for you guys at night, and it keeps LO sleeping, why not? If she's hungry, she won't be satisfied with the paci. She won't turn Paci-rexic.

  • Thanks guys. I just read a while thing about not using the pacifier to replace feedings and I was worried that's exactly what was happening at night. I guess I just figured that if the pacifier worked, she wasn't too hungry and it wouldn't work if she was hungry.

  • Of course there isn't anything wrong with that. Clearly she's not in need or she would be up screaming
