Low platelets

Anyone else out there with a low platelet count?  Mine has been steadily decreasing for about 6 weeks.  Dr is not "worried" but will continue to monitor.  She said if I drop below 100,000 she will refer me to a hematologist.

The impact is on me, not LO.  It means I will bleed more easily and could have complications from internal bleeding.  She also said if my count drops below 80,000 they won't do an epidural.  WHUT?

  • What's your counts now?

  • Same thing happened to me during my first pregnancy. The epidural cutoff for my hospital is 90- due to other complications we opted for c-section when they hit 94.

This pregnancy my platelets have been surprisingly better- levels started dropping around 28 weeks but have plateaued this last month at 140!

Side note- my MFM had me start taking a daily baby aspirin for the platelets this pregnancy. She said there is some conflicting research if it really helps or not but was worth a shot. Don't know if that has contributed to my higher levels but has your doctor mentioned that possibility?

My count as of 2 weeks ago was 110,000.  She drew blood again today to check but I don't have results yet.  She hasn't mentioned the baby aspirin idea, but it's worth a shot!

  • I have a genetic blood disorder where my blood doesn't clot like it should.  I see a hematologist every few weeks.  My platelets are low as well and if they drop too low, it is at the anesthesiologists discretion whether they will do the epidural.  I guess my biggest issue for you to discuss with the doc would be the reason why your platelets are low.  Aspirin is a blood thinner and, in my situation, would be incredibly dangerous for me to take (pregnant or not).

I also met with the anesthesiology group separately to discuss the issue and options.  If your hospital permits it, it might be something to look into.

  • @nikkijd17 low platelets are not an uncommon symptom of pregnancy (according to my doc and Dr. Google) that goes away after birth.  Thank you for the heads up about aspirin, though.  I guess I'm waiting to see if I get referred to a specialist to ask some of these additional questions.

It definitely is one of the many joys of pregnancy!  Good luck!   I hope it works out with the epidural.  That's the part that freaks me out most.
  • I don't have any experience personally, but my SIL had low platelets with both of her pregnancies.  She couldn't have an epidural, but besides that, all was well.  Good luck!

  • With DS1 I had pregnancy induced thrombocytopenia, ie low platelets. Completely resolved itself after delivery. So that's good news at least. Bad news was I couldn't have an epidural but I hope that's not a problem for you.
  • Oh boy. Fingers crossed that I can get that epi when I need it!
