Baby Names

Rhys

We don't know the sex yet but we want to have a boy/girl name picked out and ready. So, Rhys was on my boy list since we TTC but hubby HATED it! He made a big fuss over it so I dropped it. Well, out of the blue the other day he told me he decided NOW he likes it! Ha, men. He said he heard it on a TV show and really liked the way it sounded. So after all the fuss, now he wants Rhys to be the boy name.

What do you think of Rhys? I really like it. I think its handsome and strong sounding. I also really like the tradition spelling. I am concerned that here in America it is seen as a girl name and feminine. I've never even met a male Rhys/Reece. But to me it sounds really masculine. And do you think people would have a hard time pronouncing it just by looking at it? I guess I just want to know other peoples thoughts and opinions on it.

Middle name would be Edward.

Thanks!

Re: Rhys

  • Love it! I've always wanted to use this name, but DH vetoed it a long time ago. And I'd definitely keep the spelling "Rhys".

  • I like it.  I know a little boy named Rhys.  Definitely keep the spelling.  I that particular spelling makes it clearly a boy name versus the other spellings that are more unisex.
  • Rhys Edward is a great name. I have Rhys on my boy list as well.

  • I really like it and also like that spelling. That being said, I personally wouldn't use it because all the young Rhys/Reece/Reese's I know are girls and that would bother me. It makes me sad.

Be prepared for people to call him rise at first but that's really no big deal.

  • I know a boy named Reece. Even though Reece Witherspoon is a woman, I still think of it as a masculine name. I'm not a fan of it (the kid I know is a brat and ruined it for me), but I do think it to be a boy name.
  •  I personally wouldn't use it because all the young Rhys/Reece/Reese's I know are girls and that would bother me. It makes me sad.
Yeah, thats one of my concerns about it. I don't want people thinking my boy is a girl on all paper documents, etc. :/

I think if you spell it Rhys, you will have the least amount of issues.  IMO, it's the most masculine.
    I think so too.

  • My son is named Rhys so obviously we love it. We lived in the US when he was 3 and his best friend in his preschool class was another boy named Reece. We also knew a neighborhood boy named Rhys too, so we felt it was getting relatively popular for boys at least on the East coast of the US. We live in Asia now and it is pretty well known because of all the English/Aussie/Irish Welsh expats living here. So, hasn't been a problem for us at all.
  • I adore it! Rhys Edward is an amazing name and I would automatically assume any Rhys was a boy, but especially with that spelling.

  • I would've never thought to pronounce "Rhys" as "Reece." I like Reese for either sex but for a male I prefer the spelling of "Rhys" I suppose.

  • Rhys Edward is a great name.

  • Love the name Reese but I find Rhys very confusing to pronounce.

I have a friend nicknamed Riis - but it's short for Maurice.
