NBR: Things to do on Christmas Day

DH and I moved 4.5 hours away from our families over the summer and since LO is due shortly after X-Mas we are not allowed to travel. This will be the first time we both have spent the holidays away from our families.  We both are fine with spending the day by ourselves right now but I think when it actually gets here we will be a little bummed to be missing the festivities.  I know the movies are open so we may do that or watch Christmas movies at home. {We will be going to mass and having a nice dinner on X-Mas Eve.} Do you ladies have any other suggestions of things you do to celebrate when you are away from your families?

Re: NBR: Things to do on Christmas Day

  • Now's your chance to start new family traditions!  Watch Christmas movies, make cookies, play cards/board games, go on a walk/hike...what do you guys enjoy doing?  I'd try to incorporate some of your favorite pastimes and run with that for years to come!

  • We do stockings and presents in the morning first thing than a huge Christmas breakfast .. Creative pancakes, bagels with lots of fixings, mimosas (not this year of course), etc! Y'all could make an ornament together and do that every year to add to the tree the next year ... We do movies or bowling (or both) on Christmas night sometimes!
  • Nap. I would nap the eff out of Christmas day.

This is my new plan for Christmas day.  Thank you @brideandbreve !

  • We do Christmas just me and H and I LOVE it. Breakfast is usually something fun like a frittata and then we just lounge around. Definitely looking forward to not having to go somewhere with a baby next year!

  • Rest and relax would be my big thing.  Watch movies or something at home, make some popcorn or hot chocolate, curl up and read, take a long bubble bath, play games.  Do you know any of your neighbors, you could set up something to play cards or do dessert in the evening to have a little company.  You could also plan to drive around to look at Christmas lights that night as well.

  • Nap. I would nap the eff out of Christmas day.

Other than that, I would watch movies or get caught up on favorite TV shows, I would bake, play board games, exchange presents, and snack on yummy treats all day.

    This is what we do.

We like a nice chill holiday. If we were closer to family it would be a mad house with DHs giant family.

  • I would have breakfast in bed, bake cookies, watch a Christmas movie, & make a special dinner over candles if it's just the two of you.

  • We live a whole ocean away from both our families and have gotten used to spending the holidays alone. I am not going to lie, it helps immensely having DD around now.

When it was just the two of us, we spent Christmas morning sleeping in. Then we would have our traditional Christmas brunch- bacon and egg quiche, cinnamon rolls, and fruit. Followed by opening presents, skyping with family, and snuggling on the couch watching Christmas movies. I still make a Christmas ham (albeit a small one), and we have a nice romantic dinner with Chamagne and lots of wine (obviously not as romantic and less alcohol now that I am pregnant and DD is here).

  • I like the idea of what has been suggested so far:

sleep in a bit, presents with each other, big brunch, board games, if you feel like it go out to the movies, dinner....

and then are there any good neighborhoods where you could drive through and look at Christmas lights together? Or a drive through nativity? Then come home and make hot coco (or apple cider) and snuggle up!

  • We had our first Christmas alone last year because I couldn't get time off work, and H was really down about it. He made a few comments about it feeling "just like any other day".
I wanted to make it special for him so I planned a few new traditions for us. I bought us both new pjs and his favourite Christmas movie (National Lampoon) which we opened on Christmas Eve. Christmas day we opened presents slowly and then had a huge breakfast with coffee and baileys. Then we called family together and tried out/set up our new presents. We made a big dinner and ate by candle light and then watched another Christmas movie together.
It doesn't sound like much but on the actual day we both agreed it was so nice to spend a quiet, relaxing day together.
  • We've been away from our families for 5 years now on the holidays...  generally, we go to the beach, make a yummy dinner, crockpot hot cocoa and watch Christmas movies until we fall asleep.  We always make a phone call/skype/facetime call to the family to say hi and unwrap any presents that have been sent either way, and that's that.  I actually really like it that way, and am nervous for when we have to actually split holidays between families when we're not on the island.

  • I know a family who gave each other new pajamas for Christmas and then they all went out to the movies on Christmas Day in their new jammies.

You could also make a Christmas dinner for the two of you. Or go bowling. Or go to the casino. Lol I don't know.

I'm not a whole ocean away, but I am far enough away to not spend it with family after we decided we wanted DD to wake up in her own bed and house on Christmas morning. It's still an adjustment, but I agree that being wrapped up in DD helps. Last year we did brunch with our next door neighbors here, they went home for nap time (they have a daughter too), and then we went over there for dinner.

  • We are with DH's fam on Christmas, but before we knew for sure they were going to be in town we were talking about going to see anchorman 2.

I wish we had a beach to go to! Unfortunately in the midwest all of our "beaches" are covered in snow and next to frozen lakes!
  • We are that super classy family that goes to the casino on Xmas. My mom says she shouldn't have to spend a holiday cooking and so we go gamble and eat at the buffet.
